I think the southerners do it just to annoy me as that accent makes me grind my teeth. I'm pretty certain when there alone they talk like everyone else and they just put that stupid accent on to piss every one off.

Well, I was born in England and raised in Australia. I have spent two years in the USA and a couple of years traveling around South East Asia.
I don't think I have an accent any more.
I certainly don't have one of those stupid exaggerated Australian accents I hear on those adverts for all those gardening and home improvement shows.
