On one hand it was nice to get back to basics with Ep. 7, introducing new characters into a familiar story. Yet, what gets me is that Disney can literally hire the best and brightest writers from anywhere in the world to propose new ideas. And there is so much material out there (books, video games, fan fiction, etc.) that they can draw on for new concepts.

Take a risk indeed!

So many great points AE. The Internet is already abuzz with theories, but what I suspect is that Luke seeks a balance between the Light and Dark Sides and, through Rey, be able to channel both forces to create a form of "justice" that taps both sides.

If this is true, then I might finally get the more philosophically driven story I've been waiting for.

I hope and pray that there are no "reincarnation" stories. Let the characters be themselves and create a new story!

I`m still miffed Han won't be meeting Luke or calling him "Kid". Don't care how much they`d needed to pay Ford to make it happen he should have been in the eighth episode. Fans of the franchise all wanted them together on screen again.
Think they missed a massive trick in not having Leia being the one killed in Awakens also. A son killing his mother has much greater gravitas and would have been shockingly sad. As it stands I just felt pissed off when I saw Han sliced and diced.

@MaxJoker: I liked Han for his change of mind about The Force.

In the original trilogy, he thought that "old-time religion is no match for a good blaster", but in Episode 7, he says that The Force is "all real..."

Then he was killed by an upside-down-cross light saber used by Kylo Ren, his estranged son.

There was no news, at least that I read, released on further details on Ep. 8 at San Diego Comic-Con that wrapped up Sunday. But the week prior, at the Disney D23 Expo, a behind the scenes "trailer" was shown and there are some new tidbits for fans to obsess over.

@Everyone: YouTube has some rumors and leaked artwork. They have some bizarre-looking aliens; some are cuddly, some are just weird, and one of them is scary, resembling a praying mantis or spider. Then there are the Elite Praetorian Guards who defend Snoke; they are derivative of the Emperor's elite guards in Return of the Jedi, with their red-colored Mandalorian armor and their force-pikes (or force-blades?)... Kylo Ren is in Episode 8 with a huge scar on the right side of his face, and he has a custom TIE fighter.

I'll keep everyone posted as best I can on Episode 8, maybe every 3-4 weeks? Or possibly in the meantime, they will release another trailer if we are very lucky.

@Everyone: I was on vacation for the last two weeks of August, so I didn't tune into YouTube to follow rumors until I got back in this first week of September. The rumor mill now says that Anakin Skywalker will return in Episode 8 as a Force-Ghost, and that he may shapeshift; it's not clear whether he will be Light Side, Dark Side, or a mixture of the two. Also, Snoke's Mega Star Destroyer has been leaked; it resembles a Nazi flying-wing aircraft and will be 60 kilometers across (three of Vader's Executor ships wide, IIRC!) And the Imperial Walkers will indeed resemble gorillas. Weird stuff, but I am looking forward to a movie that is much less derivative than Episode 7 was. They had better not try to just remake The Empire Strikes Back for 2017...

I watched the trailer for Episode 8 and hope that it is not a remake of Empire.

I am looking forward to watching Luke train Rey and hopefully see Kylo Ren continue his journey to the dark side.

My predication is that Luke and Kylo will face off and Kylo will eventually kill Luke (as the second act in a trilogy is often the darkest), thus cementing his decent into the dark side.

With a fully trained and powerful apprentice, Snoke will begin to make plans to destroy the Republic once and for all.

Rey will be left without a mentor, but there is hope as Luke's ghost will return to offer her guidance.

@Everyone: Let's keep this thread alive. YouTube sources say that the third trailer for Episode 8 will be released on October 9th-10th of this year; Episode 8 opens at theaters on December 15th of 2017. YouTubers have also stated that they know for sure (from Disney) that Episode 8 will be the longest Star Wars film ever made, but the specific hours-and-minutes duration is not known.

There will be a casino and space horse racing scene in the exotic setting known as Canto Bight; Episode 8 is otherwise going to tell the stories of Rey becoming a Jedi, Finn fighting for the Resistance, and Kylo Ren reacting to everything while trying to serve Snoke. A few new pieces of concept art for the Knights of Ren and new spacecraft will be mixed in with old-school Star Wars spacecraft such as the Nebulon-B frigates, which are in at least one of the trailers up at YouTube.
