Airliners full of aviation spirit falling on heavily populated areas of N.Y. ? I think the death toll would have been far higher. Whole blocks set afire,Whole areas inaccessible to emergency services.Instead of a terrible tragedy in a confined area,You'd have the next best thing to Hell on Earth.

The target could have been a nuclear power plant. For example Indian Point, with 20 million people in the surrounding area. Ultimately, it's the balance of an calculable risk against an incalculable risk. Nevertheless, it remains a tough decision.

The U.S. air force could have followed the jets until they were flying over a wooded area or a large meadow, and then shot them out of the sky. The death toll would only have been in the hundreds, unlike the almost 3,000 deaths that occurred at the site of the twin towers collapse!!

Well, the conspiracy guys say that IS what happened to flight 93, that went down over PA without hitting its target.

Insofar as the first planes, unless they knew immediately that they had been taken over and the hijackers' intentions, I don't think they would have had that much of a chance at doing anything.

When the government first was aware that the planes had veered off course, President Bush was attending a school. His Secret Service people notified him of this and he did absolutely nothing. He should have left the school, notified the Joint Chiefs which would have notified the Air Force, and they could have sent jets from the nearest air base and possibly could have had the planes shot down, but Bush was a damn coward, and did nothing. I don't think any U.S. president has the courage to do this. In any other nation the planes would have been shot down right away.

Default Does sleeping count?

What I have been trained to believe is that -- the USG really didn't expect this attack taking place.
It had scheduled a press conference that afternoon by Attorney General John Ashcroft in which he was expected to announce another govermental assault on legal porn being so widely available.(!)
When the attack occurred, and especially with everybody so dispersed by the incident, the porn angle dropped off for the moment - to be revived when the fervor for monitoring terrorist activity on-line was switched for when the truly probably illegal porn was then restored.
