I used them all in the early days, Dogpile, Lycos, altavista and others but when Google came along it was a lot better at finding things-as to the thing about keeping a list I thought that was if you signed up for GMail account and signed into Google like that-perhaps I am wrong but it's never bothered me because anything sent to me is ignored that I didn't ask for or want so no worries on that score...so far

If privacy issues are something to seriously be concerned about where your located you'd be using

I cant imagine why it would be an issue as everything is collected at the ISP level
BUT if you mask your IP addy they have no way of tracking you

Having used google for years and never being over run by SPAM I must be of no commercial interest to them

Back to the topic

I think an add-on to firefox like this would be a better option than google instant
Still has privacy concerns as one review says but what doesnt thesedays online

with the new version of internet explorer 9 it runs better
