I recall asking my sister in law, about 3 years later, what would she do if her suspender popped and she said she would just refasten it as soon as possible, as if the other one popped and that was very likely, her stocking would fall down.

I think you may be absolutely right. Women regularly - deliberately or otherwise - revealed their stocking tops and/or suspenders in the pre-tights days. And if it was an accident, they didn't really seem to mind - they knew the boys/men enjoyed the view. So perhaps it is since the dreaded tights - which, happily, my wife wears only when the temperature demands it - arrived ( just after the mini-skirt ) that the erotic lure of the suspender has developed. Oh yes, it was a great time from the middle of the 1960´s til the middle of the 1970´s. Especially many older women (50+) wore stockings every day although their skirts also were a little bit shorter. Those years were the best time of my life and it´s a terrible pity that those years never will come back.
