Paris was declared an Open City. That's one reason why it wasn't razed. In a sense, Parisians, France and the Allies were lucky the Nazis didn't do it when they retreated.

The same couldn't be said of Manila. When Allied forces left in 1942, MacArthur declared Manila an Open City. The Japanese honored that when Homma came in, but by the time Japanese forces were in trouble, he was out. A Japanese admiral (Iwabuchi) had an axe to grind, so he disobeyed orders and the next thing you know, Manila's in shambles.

Back on topic, Notre Dame will be back and I don't mean the Fighting Irish (this time).

I strongly suspect the British government decision will be overturned on review and she will have to be allowed to return. She is not a Bangladeshi citizen and the government of Bangladesh has made crystal clear that she is not wanted there - showing very sound judgment. I seem to remember that she has an elderly male relative there who was interviewed by the BBC and spelled out that he considers her a disgrace to the family and wants nothing to do with her; so her family ties with Bangladesh aren't up to much.

No. This is fly-tipping British rubbish onto other countries and I am against it. The decision is wrong in principle and I think the legal case for it is weak. The judicial resources would be much better employed on throwing the book at Ms Begum for terrorist offences.

According to the BBC, these ridiculous UK porn restrictions will now begin in July. Phase one of the UKs conversion to a North Korean police state. How about making parents legally responsible for what their children get up to? They pay for the ISP and the equipment, they should see it's all used properly.

If Shamima Begum did in fact sew men up into suicide vests, then I think its fair to say that one's sympathies for her present unhappiness are ever so slightly diminished by her own monstrous acts, and wishing her ill will, both because she's earned it and because Britain has no reason to want such people to return, seems quite reasonable.

Because of privacy\censorship concerns I can see a lot of people ignoring this law. It should not be too hard: Opera browser incorporates a free VPN, and there are any number of free VPNs out there.

US scientists have partially revived pig brains four hours after the animals were slaughtered.

The findings could fuel debate about the barrier between life and death, and provide a new way of researching diseases like Alzheimer's.

The study showed the death of brain cells could be halted and that some connections in the brain were restored.

However, there were no signals from the brain that would indicate awareness or consciousness.

The surprise findings challenge the idea that the brain goes into irreversible decline within minutes of the blood supply being cut off.

Thirty-two pig brains were collected from an abattoir.

Four hours later the organs were connected to a system made by the team at Yale University.

It rhythmically pumped (to mimic the pulse) a specially designed liquid round the brain, which contained a synthetic blood to carry oxygen and drugs to slow or reverse the death of brain cells.

The pig brains were given the restorative cocktail for six hours.

The study, published in the journal Nature, showed a reduction in brain cell death, the restoration of blood vessels and some brain activity.

The researchers found working synapses - the connections between brain cells that allow them to communicate.

The brains also showed a normal response to medication and used up the same amount of oxygen as a normal brain.

This was all 10 hours after the pigs were decapitated.

Crucially there was no sign of the brain-wide electrical activity in an electroencephalogram (EEG brain scan) that would signal awareness or perception.

Fundamentally they were still dead brains.
