Default Initial attempts on a Cannon MP270

The software is pretty limited for this device, especially when it comes to adjusting any colour settings etc, as this is primarily a printer.

But, other than adjusting for colour, and i'd be grateful for any hints and tips on the best way to improve this aspect, I think they came out ok??

So i'd welcome your thoughts please? These were done at 400dpi for some strange reason, so I can drop them to 300dpi to conform to forum rules when I post in her thread.

Cheers

Fortunately there's no forum rule for dpi settings. So you are free to use 400dpi, but given the print quality I would use 300dpi.
The scans have a very yellow cast. What settings do you use?
I have a Canon MP640 and I use the Advanced Mode. Not that I define very much, this is all:
Auto Tone: Automatic
Moiré reduction/descreening: On
Rest is off

One thing I can recommend you is to apply more compression.
Here's the same pic recompressed with Irfanview at 80% quality settings.

This reduced the file size by 70% without noticeable differences. This will greatly improve upload and download speeds.

Cheers Jism Jim,

I set mine to Magazine(Colour), Descreen, Reduce Show-through and unsharp mask

No idea why they came out so yellow, the sauce mag is in pretty good condition...

Perhaps i'll try the Picture(colour) setting? Alas no chance to play with hue or anything like what you mentioned Midnight Air, on the scanner I have unfortunately...

So once I have scanned them and got the colours sorted, put them through something to compress them and decrease file size? And that is where Irfanview etc come into play?

I am assuming that I can mess with the colours in these progs too, though I'd prefer if I could just scan in the original colours!

Thanks for the hints and tips both of you, I'll have another play and let you see what I get!

Cheers

I would turn off Reduce Show-through and see what difference it makes.
Then I would turn off the unsharp mask and see what difference it makes.
Then I would turn off both and see what difference it makes.

And don't forget to try 300dpi and see what difference it makes.
Do you use the Basic mode or the Advanced mode?

Your scans look fine except for the yellow cast.
There is a guide in my signature for scanning magazines. Check it out, maybe it makes it easier for you.

Thanks Jim, seems like IrfanView solved the colour issue, when scanning straight out the box?

My only question would be, do I need to scan as a Bitmap and convert, the JPEG scans looked pretty good when I initially forgot to change to Bitmap and I had some issues with turning the images 180 via the batch conversion options? Seems the program may have updated since you wrote your "how to guide"?

Anyway, I went with conversion from Bitmap, but as and when I do more, I may just scan jpeg's from the 'off, unless you say otherwise?

Thanks for all your help both of you, how do these stack up?

Hi Bitrudeuk,

the new scans look fine to me.
Irfanview has been updated since I wrote my guide, the the procedure remains the same.
Of course you can scan to JPEG directly, but keep in mind that JPEG compression means a loss of data, so in general you want to do that only once.
So if you want to do some intermediate editing, like rotating or merging pics it is advisable to save to an uncompressed format like BMP first.

But by all means, do what works best for you.
