https://www.hollandandholland.com/guns/ Look at the price tags on that stuff. I would guess then that some of your aristocrats and rich corporate sorts are still sneaking off to Africa and plonking various large animals for sport. How hard is it for an average Englishman to get a license for a shotgun or a 22, presuming he lives in the country and wants to get rid of some pesky pigeons or foxes or what have you? Here, you can walk into any gun store or large department store that sells such things, fill out a form, wait a couple of minutes while the clerk calls the FBI to make sure you are not a robber or a terrorist, and walk out with your gun.

I have one gun made by Holland - not sure if it is Holland and Holland - in 500 Nitro Express. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.500_Nitro_Express The gun is old, double barreled break open type and not pristine. I can't see someone using it at beyond 100 yards. So sniping with this rifle doesn't seem like an occupation where it would be employed. Maybe short range shooting at one of those WW1 German tanks in the rear armor with special bullets, but not long range sniping. http://gundata.org/cartridge/120/.50...xpress-3-inch/

You should get it appraised. Those guns were never made for sniping or precision marksmanship, they were made to bust big animals like elephant and Cape buffalo at relatively short ranges. Thus, the huge cartridges. I don't think I would care to fire anything that size, a 12 gauge magnum loaded with slugs is punishing enough. If you have the money, you should take it on safari, I bet you can still get shells for it. You could photograph some nudie sets of primitive African girls and post them here for us to enjoy while you are at it.

Paid 1,500 or so 30 years ago. Not sure what safe it is in. Have no ammo for it. Was told it was built for the 500 black powder Nitro Express. So not sure what century it was made in. Will try to find it later this week.

A long way from my areas of expertise-but if it was a black powder cartridge I would be looking at late 19th century as a timeframe....

Here's a nice article about those sorts of rifles:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_rifle That's probably going to be a pre-1900 gun. Don't try shooting any modern ammo in it, unless you want to go shopping for a new face. I bet you can get cases that would fit the gun, for a lot of $$$, but you'd have to load your own rounds with black power and old-time lead bullets. Cost you some bucks. As a boy, I heard apocryphal tales of imbecilic nimrods firing modern smokeless shells in old time shotguns from the black powder era and doing irreparable damage to their guns and often themselves, so I think I'd take those tales to heart and ask an expert exactly what you should do to get that old gun shooting again, assuming it is in safe condition to shoot at all. Check that out with an expert first.

Question for Brits:
Have you ever dug up anything interesting? I'm envious of Brits that every third gardener seems to find a Roman villa or a Viking belt buckle -- out here, you'll find the occasional arrowhead, but that's about it. Have you ever found anything digging? |

When digging for foundations when I built an extension on my house I thought I had unearthed a WWII bomb. That is what it looked like, cilindrical metalic, with a protusion, that I thought looked like a detonator.
It turned out to be a small barrel filled with concrete, that some previous owner seemed to use as a roller. Why bury it? So, no I have not dug up anything 'interesting' sorry for waisting your time

Well, when you initially found it and was guessing what it was, it must have affected your pucker factor.
