Default Cyclone Idai: 'Massive disaster' in Mozambique and Zimbabwe

Cyclone Idai has triggered a "massive disaster" in southern Africa affecting hundreds of thousands if not millions of people, the UN says.

The region has been hit by widespread flooding and devastation affecting Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi.

Mozambique President Filipe Nyusi has called it "a humanitarian disaster of great proportion".

He said more than 1,000 people may have been killed after the cyclone hit the country last week.

Cyclone Idai made landfall near the port city of Beira in Sofala province on Thursday with winds of up to 177 km/h (106 mph).

"We need all the logistical support that we can get, " Christian Lindmeier from the UN's World Health Organization said.

There was a similar flood disaster in Mozambique nearly twenty years ago.

You would like to think that some contingency plans have been made on the basis of this previous experience.

I wonder if that cheeky Cockney comedian of an MP David Lammy will be up in arms about "white saviours" again ?

The same thought crossed my mind as well...I'd also like a few words from that esteemed campaign group "No White Saviors" and Uganda's High Commissioner too...

BTW: Conservative MP Chris Philp is blaming Mr Lammy for an £8m drop in donations to Comic Relief on the previous Friday night.
The bi-annual event also saw a fall in ratings this year.

I bet sometime in the future David Lammy will have to admit his mea culpa, but the damage will already been done, thanks to plonkers like him...

Interesting thought...apparently Mozambique has been hit by cyclones and floods before, so the authorities should have considered appropriate defences for their citizens when disasters like these occur - Mozambique is paying dearly for this oversight. As for Zimbabwe - that country was already in dire straits before Idai struck...

Do you mean something like all the contingency plans that have NOT been made in the San Francisco Bay Area following the 1989 earthquake? The Hayward fault is very large and is believed to be many years past due for a major shift. The fault lies in close proximity to many major highways, hospitals, reservoirs, and communication facilities.

There is minimal preparation, but we have been told that in the event of 7.0+ quake along the Hayward fault the destruction would be massive and the Bay Area can expect only minimal outside help for the next 3 to 6 months due to transportation difficulties.

Ratings for all terrestrial TV programs are falling, the time when these things became a shared event that you couldn't avoid are long gone.

I remember comic relief being very popular among the young, now young people barely even watch TV. I didn't watch (or donate) because it's now rubbish and I have plenty of other channels or free porn to watch on the internet, nothing to do with Lammy.

I ten to agree with that, I rarely watch any terrestrial TV but Lammy is still a daft twat.

As the full picture of this crisis slowly becomes clear, there are questions about whether the government of Mozambique could have done more to prepare for the disaster.

The floods of the year 2000 claimed hundreds of lives and yet some here feel lessons have not been learned.

"Our city was destroyed so easily because our infrastructure is not taken care of. Every time there is a problem here we need foreign countries to save us. What is our government doing, what is our own plan?" our driver asks me.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-47637166

It seems that people in Mozambique are reflecting on whether the country has made any preparations for this event. The Limpopo River doesn't flood like this very often, but it has done it before and it will do it again.
