Default Bittorrents

I was thinking about getting into downloading bittorrents for some hard-to-find vintage porn like early al$sc@n images & loops and some mainstream movies, etc. I would be termed a novice, as I've never got into the bittorrents.

I have an old laptop with Vista & an old Seagate ext. HD I was going to use.

What are problems of being mostly a leech. (Most of my stuff is easily found here or other boards & has been posted already.

I've read of people tracking you down & reporting you to your internet provider? True? Problems??

I've heard of lawsuits filed against downloaders. (I'd be small potatoes d/l-er.) True? Problems???

I've read of hacker getting into the computer & stealing your stuff. True? Problems?

Any suggestions on what bittorrent software I should get if the above is a minor risk? Major risk?

Thanks

^^ I've downloaded a couple hundred movies as BitTorrents and never had any problems with hacking, harassment or legal threats. I use the BitTorrent client software -- it's simple to download and install.

After downloading a file, I always try to let it "seed" until the share ratio is at least 2:1. Not seeding (leeching) won't get you in any trouble that I'm aware of, but it's considered bad form. It's getting something for free and not giving back anything in return.

Being a peer-to-peer service, BitTorrent downloads are rather catch-as-catch-can. A download of a feature-length film can take as little as an hour or as long as several days, depending on the number of peers and seeders. For a foreign-language film, you may have to find and download an English subtitle file. That's pretty easy to do, though.

Good luck with your BitTorrent hunting!

Ask the thousands of torrent users who were sued if it is safe. As a torrent user you are uploader and downloader at the same time and this is the big problem. Make a search on google before u start using it. Read the articles how dangerous it is if u not protect yourself before u use it! It is not that safe and simple like scotpens wrote.

That may be sound advice, but I can only speak from my personal experience. All I can say is I've downloaded nearly 300 movies as BitTorrents and never had a problem. YMMV.

Here's a page with a good explanation of the benefits and risks of BitTorrent downloading.

Maybe u had luck all the time but u have to mention the risks if someone ask about it. A whole industry of lawyers and software firms only have one job: catch torrent users. Thats simple a fact.

p.s. the link u posted after i wrote my posting is a good step to learn about safety.

I'd be interested to know if anyone around here uses a VPN - if so, how effective are they?

Most sites require you to not go below a certain threshold or you will be banned or suspended. They usually give you a bonus to start (say 50gb) but if you go below 25%, that's it until you get the ratio up again.

Stay away from major Hollywood films, some studios have gone after downloaders for downloading those films.

Should be okay with downloading files since they tend to be .avi's or mpeg's but be careful with the site you get the torrent from. Use a good virus checker and a good utility to check for malware.

Biggest problem is trying to get an invitation to join a site. Most, and I hate to use the term legitimate, requires you to sign in and getting an invitation to join can be difficult.

You also may not find adult movies that are not on here but you can certainly find everything else out there.

So, take precautions but you should have fun finding things that you never thought you would find.

The biggest problem now, is ISPs block access to many of the torrent sites themselves,
(though not the actual trackers), so finding torrents in the first place is harder.

I think the search engines were forced to de-list or demote torrent sites a while ago,
but many are still listed, though trying to access them gets a "blocked by ISP" page.

Tor browser can get round this though.

I dont think old porn (movies/videos) torrents would be a problem. However you can try cyberlockers as an alternative (There are lots of it on VEF like 1fichier, k2s, mega etc).
It is also depends on the country you are living. In my hometown even mainstream movie torrents are not a problem. There is no company monitors them and there is no jurisdiction involved with it. I also never heard anyone sued about downloading torrents here.
But I still prefer paid VPN services for downloading because it encrypts my connections. I think you should get a paid VPN because you are living in the US. Maybe your ISP would send you a letter after torrenting with your own home IP.
However I still think old porn stuff shouldnt be get any notices imho.
