We pretty much all now our legal system is shit and run by brainless muppets but it's still disconcerting to see how shockingly bad it really is

Wendigo, I have no comment on crime in Britain.

However, I have some comments on crime statistics. Many years ago the Seattle Police Department published a map showing, in four-color glory, the crime rates for the various precincts of the city. There appeared to be several anomalies, so I contacted the person who had assembled the map and asked him about the anomalies. He pointed out that in mapping he had used all crimes reported, so a murder counted the same as a bicycle theft. The major university had a lot of bicycle theft, not so many murders.

Bicycle theft has a much lower clearance rate than murder. And every time an officer smelled the delightful aroma of cannabis, he reported it as a crime, but unsolved.

There is, of course, also the problem of perception versus reality. In the United States our national crime rates peaked in the late 1970s and started down. At present our crime rates have sunk to a plateau at the low level of the early 1950s. However, television news departments have been cut drastically, both nationally and locally. The easiest, most flashy kind of news is the cheapest to cover--Fires and crime. Therefore, when the incidence of crime is near the lowest point ever, almost two-thirds of Americans believe it is near its highest point ever.

Apparently Roxanne Pallet has been involved in a car accident while stock car racing-she crashed into a concrete wall and was unconscious for 30 seconds and was airlifted to hospital. This happened yesterday.

Sorry, Misspelled her name: Roxanne Pallett, an actress who used to be in Emmerdale and has been in several films, most notably 'Lake Placid 3' and 'Wrong Turn 6'.
