If you encounter ransomware...

First, re-boot in Safe Mode. Check the LAN settings to see if the malware is using a proxy server, and if so disable it. A little program called Rkill will stop such ransomware processes from running, so download and run that next. Finally, do a full Malwarebytes scan and remove the malware and any associated changes to your computer. You should now be ready and able to re-boot normally.

Allegedly Microsoft Security Essentials Enterprise negates crypto - we had to investigate after a staff member got his personal laptop and external drive infected and lost 10 years of stuff. Cannot say if this is true but we are clear to date.

rachels_sissy,

Understand most of this but I don't understand this portion:

What do you mean by "we are clear to date"?

Use Hitman Pro Alert 2 (Free tool). Also Bitdefender offers a free hardened browser called Safepay. You can also incorporate Sandboxie and Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit into your arsenal. Many of the above are a good ounce of prevention. If you can avoid it, don't run Java or Flash. They are known modes of transmission for many nasties. If you must run them, make sure they are always up to date.

Its pretty well known that security software from different vendors has the potential to cause conflicts with each other so anything is possible

Unfortunate but i do wonder if people have this all backwards
Crypto or MSE or who ever arent a 100% guarantee
especially on Windows

That alone says the most important piece of security software is your back-up copy (hopefully not connected via an external hard drive thats simply been copied over)
that can easily restore everything

Have that in place and cyptolocker is nothing to fear

This one stop monster tutorial about everything security related should be a must read
Goes into backing up in depth as well

2011-2014 - it goes well beyond other tutorials from tech support alert
that I've posted previously
