So I'm watching an American TV show the other night and one of the characters who was shot in the previous episode...well in the shoulder actually, but I digress...is forced to leave hospital early because her insurance has lapsed and she can't afford treatment. Would that happen in real life?

Absolutely. The "health care system" in the USA is all about money. Except in the emergency room, which I understand charges a minimum of $5000 per appearance, no one in health care will touch you until it is determined that you have some sort of insurance or the private means to pay whatever exorbitant price the most expensive health care system in the world deems appropriate.

I've got a question. Is it true that the US gets convicts to do all the jobs for free that no one else wants to do, or is that just a myth?

Work is done in most prisons in America. The convicts/workers are paid pennies per hour for use in the prison canteens.
