I am currently reading Charles King, 2014, Midnight at the Pera palace: The birth of modern Istanbul. One chapter in his social/cultural history of that city has sections about Turkish music including a brief account of Roza Eskenazi, one of the leading figures from the 1920s in the development of rebetiko music (#1).
Another noted musician from this period is Hrant Kenkulian, one of the premier players and innovators of the oud (#2). A third musician is the vocalist Seyyan (#3). King makes some interesting remarks about rebetiko and its entangled relationship with the mass (often variously forced) migrations of Greeks, Jews, Armenians, Turks, and others in this period. Too much to type here but there is the following, in part related to jazz (and Turkish taksim idiom) improvisation: "Musical styles never stay inside their proper lines; they jump over into new and unexpected venues." |
