I'd also recommend using the software program Hijack This for further peace of mind
just heed the warnings below when your tempted to actually take action yourself

I use it simply to know whats in my registry but never actually use it to remove things without posting for help on the spyware forums if i have issues which i cant resolve as any false step and you can easily make your PC worse,much worse

HijackThis should only be used if your browser or computer is still having problems after running Spybot or another Spyware/Hijacker remover. HijackThis is an advanced tool, and therefore requires advanced knowledge about Windows and operating systems in general. SUPERAntiSpyware is a great program; in fact, it's the only non-freeware program I have running on my computer - that's how good I think it is. I believe the pro licence currently retails over the net for around $29.99. However, there is a way of obtaining it at a vastly discounted price. Simply download the fully-functional pro version and try it free for 2 weeks. After that time it will prompt you to either purchase the pro version, un-install it or switch to using the free version. Choose the option to un-install it. Once un-installed a pop-up should appear that gives you the opportunity to purchase the pro version for only $9.99. This is what happened just a week ago when I installed it for a friend of mine. I purchased the program in the same way for my own computer about 2 years' ago - money was tight at the time and I couldn't afford the full 30 bucks, which is why I was initially going to un-install it. When my pro licence expired after the first year I was given the option of renewing it for a further year at $9.99, or buying a lifetime licence for just $19.99. I of course chose the second option and consider it to be one of best computer-related purchases I've ever made.

My own experience is that SUPERAntispyware and Malwarebytes
are two of the best antispyware applications but use as scanners
only. SAS is great against adware and MBAM is fantastic for
removing Rogue AV. This two programs are very nice detecting
what regular Antivirus applications don't. Like somebody said early
you should use a good antivirus/antispyware aplication real time but
only one. In my case I use Avira free and I surf with FF with Noscript
sandboxed, using sandboxie. In my setup sandboxie is the key to stay
free of malware. Since I been using it (10 months) malware is not even
close to infecting my computer. Everybody should try Sandboxie, and as
you learn about it you ll feel surfing free of worrying about getting infected.
In just a few words, since I been using Sbxie, when I run scans by SAS,
MBAM , Avira or any other they never find nothing, not even cookies.

The only reason, that Mac is not so heavily attacked, is that Mac is a MINORITY OS; just like a couple of years ago, everyone said, use Firefox it s safe. Since everyone uses FF, you have to care bout your secure, using tools like Sandboxie, NoScript..., it wasn t neccesary to do that 3-4 years ago ( a simple av guard and a spyware protector/removetool was enough). If more people would buy a Mac, it s just a matter of time, til Mac PCs are attacked in the same way, like Win OS.
But right now, it s not impoprtant for all these hackers/crackers to write scripts for a Mac, for what? If you have the choise to get acces on 1 Mac, or on 1000 Win, what would you do?

Exactly. So get a Mac and hope not too many others do!

Not anti-spyware as such, but worth considering installing CCleaner if you haven't already got it as that clears the temporary folders that trojans etc usually lurk in and can otherwise be hard to remove from.

In November 1988, a computer program caused an estimated 10% of computers on the Internet to shut down. This program, commonly referred to as "the Morris worm", entered computers and continuously recopied itself, consuming
resources and hampering network operations. It was designed to attack Sun-3 and VAX computer systems that used system software based on Berkeley Software Distribution UNIX.

Microsoft is just a copy cat, although much more succesfull.

I don't have any antispyware programs. I have a turned off antivirus program somewhere and I update the virus definitions each Christmas.

PLEASE not the Mac versus Windows ongoing saga...have heard all the arguments before and they really are falling on DEAF ears....I say that because it doesnt solve anything and it certainly doesnt help the poster of this thread...Unless of course all of you who keep popping in to say "buy a mac" want to pay for it

Closer to being relevant would be give linux a try on a free distro if your using windows

Had an infection yesterday which my avast anti-virus detected but couldnt remove
- useful NOT.I started cleaning with a few well knowns and the differences were stark

Spybot Search and Destroy found nothing

Super Anti-Spyware found nothing

Malwarebytes cleaned all 106 copies of the 1 nasty that got through

I think relying on any one program for removal be it a paid security suite or a much vaunted anti-spyware program is a big risk...none of them find everything and some find nothing

Now I'm off to run an online scanner,probably kaspersky's

For me, it s not the microsoft vs mac saga, and although this is a vintage forum, it s not about what happened 1987/8, we have to care bout secure today. (Please note, that if we Micro Softies would be copycats, why do we pay only half the price for faster hardware than mac users (My new pc: AMD Phenom II X4 955[4 x 3.2GHz], 4096 MB DDR3 PC1333MHz, 750 GB Harddrive SATA2 16MB Samsung, 22 x DVD Multi-DoubleL. LG, Nvidia Geforce GT 280 1024MB DDR3, Gigabyte GA-MA785GT-UD3H Mainboard, Win7 Professional cost me 897 €)? and how many pc run on win back in 87/8?)

I use Avira, Malewarebytes and NoScript.
I check my pc using Trendmicro http://de.trendmicro.com/de/about/contact_us/index.html every 4 weeks.
What sould I say, I use this combination for nearly a year, and I had no issues in that time.
And I don t avoid the "darker side" of the net.

Buttsie , if you had been using Sandboxie at the time you got infected, you ll
be ok now because when you delete the sandbox after surfing that nasty
would have been gone, never making any permanent changes to your system.
So get your machine clean and try sandboxie.
