I've yet to see a contribution to this thread that has shown any sympathy with criminals or disregarded the feelings of the victim in favour of the criminal.

The easiest way to try to win an argument is by misrepresenting the stance of your opponent and then arguing on the basis of the misrepresentation, but it would disingenuous to do so. That's why I for one haven't resorted to making accusations against all those in favour of the death penalty as to what I feel their real motives may be.

I've heard that in Glasgow's Barlinnie prison it's been known for a chair leg to be thrust vigorously up the arsehole of someone in for child sex offences.

There really is no question about this: the FBI data is authoritative.

It also is no reflection on them. The FBI has no responsibility or involvement in most violent crime-- the FBI's responsibility is limited to Federal crimes. Garden variety rapes, murders, burglaries have nothing to do with them. They collect data from the localities, but in general these are not their cases. There are other sources for the same data. Car thefts also show up on the books of insurance companies, rapes and assaults show up in hospital admissions, homicides show up in coroners' reports. These are massive trends, nationwide, over decades-- not possible to manufacture false numbers of that sort.

Its important to get this right, because there's so much confusion about the facts.

Sensational press and Internet buzz convince people that there's some "rising tide" of crime and violence-- and then when you go and lookat the data, its clear that the opposite is true. We are vastly safer than we were a generation ago.

. . . and so if the rationale for a return to the death penalty is "to combat crime" its important to observe that (with one exception) we haven't been safer in decades. (the one exception is inner city black men, who kill and are killed at extraordinary rates)

No one is suggesting everybody in prison is innocent,You appear to believe that it is impossible and You are remarkably sanguine about the prospect of an innocent person being hanged.Of course should an innocent be punished,That does mean the guilty party is free to commit more crimes.

Most people with an axe to grind tend to disregard any statistics (no mater how authoritative) that run counter to their own prejudices (or 'gut instinct' as they prefer to call it). But they will willingly accept any theory as fact which happens to reinforce those instincts, especially when they're backed-up by personal experience - no matter how limited - or the experiences of someone they know who knows someone who's the brother of the cousin twice removed of a guy who was murdered just the other day.

Failing all that, they can always turn to the tabloids for some informed, balanced and honest debate on the subject.

Hanging? No...but lethal injection yes...and only in such cases that can be proved beyond all doubt.

This reminds me to a little story. In a faraway land, it was decided to reinstate the death penalty. This will of course need an executioner. So they put an ad in the newspaper and shortly after that 100 people came for an job interview. It took a long time and the prospective employer had a lot of questions. Finally, one of them was taken for the job and the others went empty-handed.


The frightening part is : The other 99 still running free around.
