Au revoir les enfants (1987)

Trailer

During WWII in occupied France, Julien Quentin (Gaspard Manesse) returns to his Carmelite boarding school from a vacation. He likes to act tough but the truth is that he's a mama's boy and a bedwetter. Three new students are introduced by Father Jean, the school's headmaster, one of them being Jean Bonnet (Raphaël Fejtö). At first Julien despises him like most of his schoolfellows. He's also jealous of Bonnet's talents. One night, Julien wakes up and discovers that Bonnet wears a kippah and is praying in Hebrew. The priests who are running the school are hiding Jewish students from the Germans and French collaborators. Bonnet's real name is Kippelstein, something that Julien finds out soon. During a treasure hunt, the two boys get lost in the woods and become friends but for how long can Jean remain safe?

A beautifully directed and told story about friendship and man's best and worst character traits in a time when compassion and humanity are most needed. Au revoir les enfants (English title: Goodbye, Children) is an autobiographical film by the late Louis Malle, based on his experiences at a Catholic boarding school where he witnessed the arrest of three Jewish students and a Jewish teacher. One of the students was his close friend.

Creature Lake (2015)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2229952/

Hmmm, a group of friends are invited to a remote cabin in the woods the deeds for that area have been won whilst gambling. They are surprised that no one wants them there, it's not long before they start to see and hear things and there is something in the lake

Ok but nothing too challenging

Kingsman,The Golden Circle,Watched this today.Like most modern sequels it's more of same but more so. All the familiar elements are present amid much CGI including a memorable scene involving co star Colin Firth.Julianne Moore's villain is less annoying that Samuel L Jackson's, While Halle Berry ,Channing Tatum and Jeff Bridges make little much more than token appearances. The little known (To Me) Pedro Pascal channels Burt Reynolds in a supporting role.

Watched "Their Finest" 2016 film http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1661275/ about English scriptwriters doing a Dunkirk film right after the event for propaganda purposes. Pretty good film. The main female lead is so damn attractive, long lush legs, bust protruding thru tight sweaters, I had a hard time trying to keep up with the story. Actually stopped the film and went to see what nudes she had on line - Gemma Arterton.
not from the film.
Worth the time to watch 4 of 5 stars.

Default T2: Trainspotting

**May contain minor spoilers**

I really wanted to like this – ah yes, pointless nostalgia, where would we be without it? What is its evolutionary purpose? I have no idea.

This is not the visceral gut-punch of the original, but that clearly was not the intention. The characters are as compelling as they ever were, and the performances are equally satisfying, but I had a few issues with this sequel.

Firstly, Ewan McGregor and Jonny Lee Miller are still too young and handsome looking. They look as if they’ve spent the last 20 years down the gym, not in some crack den or dive bar.

Then there’s the plot, which is more or less non-existent – if there is one, I couldn’t spot it. The novel on which this film is mainly based (‘Porno’), at least has a purpose. Beyond acknowledged cap-tipping nostalgia, the movie picks up and then drops sub-plots willy nilly, and the characters just walk into each other at convenient moments – Renton just happens, after 20 years, to walk in on Spud at the exact moment Spud needs to be saved from a suicide attempt. Renton just happens, after 20 years, to return to Edinburgh at the EXACT same time that Begbie, after 20 years, breaks out of prison......again, this is all dealt with much more deftly in the novel.

So, Begbie. Absolutely terrifying in the original, a distilled psycho of the purest water, who gets off on violence, and is somehow more frightening because he’s not a very large man. Robert Carlyle is still wonderful in the role, but to me, he was the most unsatisfying of the main characters, because Begbie just seems to be the pantomime villian – he just shows up whenever they need some tension. It’s a shame.

Almost ditto for Kelly McDonald. I’m very glad that she appears, but she is only in one scene, and that scene seems to have been contrived simply so they could have her appear somehow. She’s a brilliant actress, could they no have found her something more substantial to dae?

Spud is still adorably hangdog, and I quite enjoyed that they made him the author of it all, as he does have literary ambitions in the source material, and he is the ‘heart’ of both movies.

The visuals are very nice too, Danny Boyle really knows what he’s doing. The movie is okay. Worth watching, and I can’t say that I’m sorry they made it.

Near Dark (1987)

Trailer

One night, Caleb Colton (Adrian Pasdar), a young man from a small town in Oklahoma, meets the attractive Mae (Jenny Wright) who is visiting with "friends". They get together but for some reason, Mae urges him to drive her home. Caleb agrees but only if she gives him a kiss. What he gets instead is a bite and what follows is his slow transformation into something he doesn't understand. On his way home, Caleb's skin begins to smoke, the reason being exposure to sunlight. Suddenly he is picked up by a RV, owned by Mae's people who are, as it turns out, a bunch of bloodthirsty vampires led by Jesse Hooker (Lance Henriksen). The most sadistic among them, Severin (Bill Paxton), wants to kill Caleb but Mae assures them that he was already turned. Jesse decides to give him a week to gain the group's trust and become a blood-drinking hunter but Caleb refuses to kill.

A romantic and melancholic vampire film by Kathryn Bigelow. It seems like she hired half of the Alien II cast, probably because she was in a relationship with James Cameron at the time. Of course, I have to mention the superb soundtrack by Tangerine Dream. My favorite tracks are Pick Up at High Noon and Mae's Transformation.

Monster Safari (2017)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1458170/

Warning .... spoilers
Oddly there's very little about this future classic on the web

Watching on Amazon TV now, a cryptozoologist is on the track of unknown beasts, starts with Bigfoot in a nudist colony ..... you get the general idea, just over 60 minutes of almost naked women (and the odd bloke ) and guys in poorly made monster outfits, much of the nudity is trimmed out then it switches to outer space

Hard to see who it is actually aimed at but a bit of research and an Amazon review helpfully states "This is actually Monster of the Nudist Colony (2013) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3821674/ and Serena the Sexplorer (2013) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2780216/ joined together and with all the sex scenes edited out. What is the point of this?" I think that pretty much sums it up.

Harmless fun but would score a definite 0 on Pointless

Default The Trip To Spain (2017)

Watched The Trip To Spain with Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan last night. Definitely worth a watch if you like those two.

Mini spoiler: Rob Brydon doing Roger Moore for what seems far too long at first then nowhere long enough the funnier it gets.

The 7 Faces Of Dr Lao with Tony Randall. I'd forgotten how entertaining that movie is.
