Next I did it with the "huffYUV" and this one worked with a playable, good volume file although it was 62 GB's.

I'm now trying the "XViD" codec and I think I adjusted the bitrate settings so it's not as big as 62 GB's. I try to aim for 1 GB to as high as 4 GB for my stored files (seems like better quality)even though these sizes are frowned upon by most.

Any suggestions on what codec to use ?

If I can get this figured out, this program will be a HUGE improvement over others. Neat features like video editing stuff, a plus.
Using the xvid codec with a bitrate setting of @1500KB/sec will usually get you a nice quality avi at around 1 GB. If you use the newer h264 codec, you can get better video quality than xvid at the same bitrate. Using mp3 for the audio will also give you a smaller overall file size with good audio quality.

I've transferred a couple of tapes today using the XviD and think that's probably what I'll stick with.

Thanks for tip on the H264 that sounds worth a try too.

Thanks to everyone for the help, especially Tester for suggesting this excellent program. Way better than Super IMO.

Default Blurred or jagged edges, similar to LQ WMV file.

These were two different movies I converted with the XMedia Recode.

The first, Kinky Vision, was done in the XviD codec and file ended up being about 2 GB (the size I like).

The second, Search For Canadian Beaver, was done with the H.264 codec and ended up being about 1 GB.

I've highlighted some of my concerns in the following screenshots from these titles after the conversion. The tapes played in my VHS player a lot better looking than the jagged or blurred edges of objects I have circled. I started out using AVS 4 U software before the Super (C) and this is how the transfers looked using AVS 4 U. In my opinion, this makes it look like a mediocre transfer similar to when I started this whole VHS transfer thing using the WMV format.

What are these jagged, blurred, or horizontal / diagonal lines referred to as or better yet is there a filter within the program I can check to get rid of this ? I didn't get these jagged edges with Super (C), but I think Super (C) had a few more boxes you could check before starting a conversion such as "high quality", "48K", "best quality", etc.

Is this something to do with deinterlace, denoise, image stabilizer or the scaling mode ( bilinear, fast bilinear, cubic, etc. ) ?

The videos show these issues more obvious as they occur, although these screenshots give a smaller reference of what's happening - even though they may not look too bad.

Yes, they look like interlace jags. Interlacing looks good on traditional crt screens, but bad on TFT and plasma.
Another thing you may look at is fixed or variable bitrate. in material with a lot of motion, like porn, a variable bitrate may give a better result. I think that was the 'high quality' setting in Super.

Thanks, this gives me some clues where to start looking. I've come to a halt on transfers again until I get this pesky situation worked out.
