Finding the 'best' software is always a matter of personal needs and requirements.

Although I do not use it, VeraCrypt seems a good solution after TrueCrypt went away: https://www.veracrypt.fr/en/Home.html
VeraCrypt does not encrypt folders, but it can create encrypted containers which can be mounted like a hard drive.

I personally use LUKS/dm-crypt under Linux.

I have used Safehouse Explorer, which works in a similar way.

Truecrypt can still be found at Steve Gibson's website, www.grc.com. Look for the "Other" tab. When you click on Other, you will see "True Crypt Repository." There are Windows and Linux versions available. Also, Windows 7-10 now have Bitlocker built-in, even in the Home Premium versions, so I'm told. Personally, I don't trust anything Microsoft puts out, but I'm probably paranoid.

Then again, paranoia is your best friend when it comes to your data, which is why you encrypt all your sensitive data and make at least 2 backups of all the data you cannot afford to lose. One copy of the backup is, preferably, stored offsite. In a safety deposit box. Under armed guard 24/7. Ok, not that crazy, but you get the idea. For anything you cannot afford to lose or do not want to lose, there are 3 things to remember: back it up, back it up, back it up, because backups fail like anything else, and all your sensitive data is encrypted.
