Watched the 1950 western, Broken Arrow, earlier; with James Stewart & co.
Brilliant movie; but one I'd not seen until today. (Usually assume when seeing the title it's the Travolta/Slater one about the nuclear plane crash from rather more recently)

Of all the estimable James Stewart/Anthony Mann westerns,Winchester 73 is My personal favourite. It has been reviewed in this thread before but, IMHO it is notable as the first movie in which the Hero is the one seeking revenge. The relationship between Lola Manners (Shelley Winters) and Waco Johnny Dean (Dan Duryea) the swaggering sociopath who killed Her cowardly fiance(Charles Drake) is interesting too,She despises Him but there is definitely something there. That of course changes when Lin McAdam (Stewart of course) turns up,Lola loses no time in helping McAdam kill Waco Johnny..

This brings to mind the Robert Altman & Paul Newman collaboration "Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull's History Lesson" (1976)
A very interesting movie, which raised the question "Frank. how stupid do you have to be to cheat on Annie Oakley?" Sadly, the art of making great westerns seems to have been lost along with the ability to create memorable women characters. |

Do mini-series count?
If so, I have really been enjoying watching "Godless" on Netflix.
Jeff Daniels does an amazing job as the series' villain Frank Griffen as he hunts down outlaw-turn-good guy Roy Goode. The town the series takes place in is populated entirely by women, who can hold their own Michelle Dockery shines as Alice Fletcher One thing I love about Westerns is strong female characters If you need something new in the Western genre I'd highly recommend checking this series out!
