Never really was into sci-fi or fantasy as a kid. Can't stand it as an adult.
Thought the first star wars of trilogy was decent. Only saw the first of the second trilogy and thought the parts I stayed awake for were absolutely ridiculous. Not my cup, and I don't really understand the phenomenon. However, I have several friend aged in their mid 40s to early 60s are more excited about this than anything I can remember. So, I'm happy for them.

I was just coming of age when Star Wars came out , Here in the desert they only showed the movie on one theater for the first 4 months and so I had to wait until it was released valley wide , then I saw one of the best movies I`d seen since Jaws had come out , definitely worth the wait and to this day I can still remember exactly when I saw Star Wars .
Seeing the very pretty Carrie Fisher in the movie was a big plus |

Have to echo winebeavis's sentiment - not for me, but I do have good, close friends who love the films. They are people of good taste so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the new film delivers for them.
I do, however, wish they could find some other topic to post on their flippin' Facebook pages!! |

I'm looking forward to the new movie. I'm a huge star wars/sci-fi fan and actually liked the prequel movies. I thought Anakin's path to becoming Darth Vader in revenge of the sith was well done and while some of the dialogue was hokey, so is a lot of the dialogue from the original star wars. I'm an old-school practical effects guy but CGI looks pretty convincing nowadays, most movies use it, and JJ Abrams has said he's tried to use practical effects as much as possible. Will the new one be perfect? No. Will it be fun? Probably. And it will make a boat load of money, which is really all Disney cares about anyway.

I can't remember being this excited about a new film release in my adult life, I wasn't about the prequels (I can't remember why not) but this one, absolutely.
Seing one of the trailers on the big screen when I went to see SPECTRE has just increased the anticipation even more. If I was able to stay awake until 3am I'd have booked a ticket for a midnight screening on release day, as it is I'll catch it when I can. |

I've been thinking about the phenomenon of "Star Wars" and the new Star Wars film lately because a close friend (female) is very enthusiastic to see "The Force Awakens". I'm 57, she's 50. I grew up reading a lot of Science Fiction and Fantasy and my favourite film between the ages of 10 and 20 was "2001: A Space Odyssey", which I first saw in the cinema aged 10. That said, I've never shared the wide-spread enthusiasm even for the first "Star Wars" film. This isn't to say I hate the films, it's just that even back in 1977 they struck me as old hat. Yes, the Special Effects were very good for their time but the actual story.... meh! Back in the early 60s when I was a small child my local fleapit used to have a Children's Saturday Morning Film Club that used to show old slapstick comedies and old space opera serials from the late 30s and 40s and Star Wars struck me as one of those old space operas on steroids. I wasn't surprised when I read a few years later that George Lucas's intent was to make a modern version of those old "Flash Gordon" type serials. I also found out he'd been inspired by Akira Kurosawa films like "Hidden Fortress" but I didn't see these until long after I'd seen the original Star Wars trilogy. I don't know anyone older than 50 who has any enthusiasm for the Star Wars films. I know three middle aged women of 50, 50 and 49 and a man of 42 who are out-and-out "Star Wars" fans. It strikes me that the oldest of these would have been 12 when she saw "Star Wars - A New Hope" whereas I would have been 19 or 20 when I did. By that age I'd already seen "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", "Midnight Cowboy" and "Taxi Driver" and "Star Wars" struck me as a moderately entertaining kid's film. It still strikes me that way. The first two films of the original trilogy are entertaining, "Return of the Jedi" embarrassing, and the second trilogy tedious. I expect that I'll see "SW - the Force Awakens" in the cinema soon, probably accompanying my friend, that she'll love it and I'll find it moderately enjoyable, about as entertaining as I found the first two Star Wars films, largely because JJ Abrams knows how to direct science fiction action movies. But is my heart pounding with anticipation? No. I hope all you Star Wars fans find the new movie a much more satisfying experience than the second trilogy but as for me, I suspect for someone to feel real enthusiasm for the Star Wars franchise he or she has to have first seen the films as a child or a very young teenager. I'd guess there are very few Star Wars fans over the age of 50.

On Monday night I received a text from my sister-in-law asking if I'd like to go to the cinema on Monday night (7pm GMT) to see the new Star Wars movie. She originally wanted it to be a special treat for the two of them, but unfortunately she couldn't make it, and seeing how it was all pre-booked she thought that I'd like to go instead. If I'm honest I wasn't too sure about this new movie. Given the amount of negativity towards the last three films (the Prequals), the fact that I'm now in my thirties and that this would be the seventh film I wasn't really to worried about seeing now at my age. 15 years ago, perhaps, when I was a lot younger, but now I was somewhat wondering if I had grown past it a bit? But given the overwhelming good reviews it has received so far I've kind of changed my attitude about it since it's release a bit. There's only one very small concern for me-I've read one of the reviews that revealed a minor (but key) plotline with regards to the films overall story involving <SPOILER> Luke Skywalker apparently having disappeared and no one knows where he is, and having seen the trailers and clips I think I may have already worked out what that plot twist might actually be already. Considering the fact that I've not even SEEN it yet, I'm curious to see if my theory about the (potential) plot twist might actually be true. (Any one wanting to know what my theory is just message me). I'm not saying that it might necessary be TRUE mind-I might be wrong about that idea, but I'll just have to wait and see.
