Gagarin was much more famous but the Cosmonaut I personally admire most is/was Alexei Leonov: an astonishingly cool customer. The end of the first ever space walk was jolly nearly the end of him; yet he treated his lethal problems as just an irritating hurdle between him and his next vodka and overcame them without breaking into a sweat. It went something like this:

Leonov: This spacesuit is crap. The air is puffing it up so bad I can't fit the hatch to get back in the capsule.
Ground Control:
Leonov: Any suggestions?
Ground Control:
Leonov:
Leonov: Never mind. Maybe I'll just loosen a glove and let the air out.
Ground Control: Don't do that!!!!
Leonov: Too late. I've already done it. I'm back inside now.

There is also the rumour that the actual first man in space didn't make it back and Gargarin was presented to the World's press as a replacement.

Ahh, so the Russian side has its conspiracy theorists too? I guess it's an international thing.

Now that the Russian fleet can no longer refuel in Spain(request withdrawn?) who will, NATO put pressure on Spain to refuse Russian fuel, will NATO now ban NATO members from supplying goods to NATO members who kill/target civilians(accidentally obviously).

Will NATO bring pressure on UK government to stop supplying armaments to Saudi`s after they killed civilians in Yemen.

Laika?

According to this she has a monument near Moscow, but I haven't seen it. I'm pretty sure she was on a postage stamp too. Collectors probably still have them

The involvement of Saudi Arabia in Yemen, is at the request of the legitimate government, so it seems strange that criticism is raised here against Saudi Arabia, and by the way, most of the Gulf States are a part of the coalition, yet the Russian actions in Syria are being justified for exactly that reason!

Britain supplies weapons to Saudi Arabia, along with the US, Russia supplies weapons to Syria, so the difference is? The single UN response has been an arms embargo, placed on the Houthis the rebels, who are agreed by all observers as those most responsible for most of the civilian casualties. Major diplomatic attempts are still taking place.

I suppose this might be the point which Palo is making. I regret to say it is a vald point. US forces bombed and flattened an MSF hospital in Afghanistan not long ago. If we dislike what the Russians are doing in Syria, we might consider just how ethical western forces have been in various recent interventions, because everyone else will consider this when our official spokespeople take the high ground.

The flattening of the MSF hospital, was a combination of poor training and even worse piloting. It was the wrong target and in error. But apologies are not enough. The difference here is that this was in error, not a deliberately target strike, designed purely to instill fear.

The facts do not justify that strike, but nothing can justify a regime in deliberately targeting its own civilians.
