There is also the ‘best before’ to consider. The Beef sarnie would be best before ...you put mustard on it

Look and sniff tests are always good. Milk is usually good for one week past the "use by" date provided it is properly refrigerated and nobody is swigging from the container. I had to take a course in food handling and storage.

There is a place in Lisbon that sells 'vintage' sardines, up to ten years old. This means their entire stock is past its sell by date. I once ate a tin of sardines that had been in my workshop for ten years. I must admit they went through me faster than usual, but the flavour was just incredible. I have not looked at the date on a tin or jar for years.

A friend has not been able to get more than twenty feet from the toilet for two days. A seafood salad is probably the culprit although it was well in date and had no discernible odour.
Two things: first, when I see labourers picking salad stuff I never see toilet facilities. And the salad gets washed in what by whom? E coli for lunch anybody?Second, the Koran and Talmud both forbid eating anything from water without scales mainly because if the bastards are not perfectly fresh they can kill you.
I only buy frozen, which is not a guarantee,, but minimses the risk of shitting through the eye of a needle.

If food is dangerous to eat after its sell by date, why are Foodbanks thriving?

Mainly because decent ordinary people are picking up the slack left by unthinking, uncaring elected sacks of shit.

It's not. Sell by isn't the same as use by and use by has a bit of leeway in it. Most processed foods, especially canned and packaged, can be eaten after the use by. It's generally a quality issue not a safety one.

Lump of lamb that was in the freezer for eight years or more. Best lump of meat I have tasted in years.

I never freeze meat, doing that ruins it. When you thaw meat, that bloody juice is the result of cellular damage. I buy enough for two days and keep it in the fridge.

Your cellular damage is my tenderiser. Stews and sauces get frozen to increase the effect. It's not that I dont like chewing meat, but I do like not having to.
