Chad Allan

aka Allan Peter Stanley Kowbel OM (March 29, 1943 – November 21, 2023), better known by his stage name Chad Allan, was a Canadian musician. He was the founding member and original lead singer of The Guess Who. He also later joined back up with Randy Bachman to form Brave Belt which eventually morphed into BTO after his departure.

The website of the visual kei band the Gazette (stylized as the GazettE) sadly announced that the group’s bassist Reita passed away on April 15. He was 42. No further information was given about his death. “We would like to express our deepest gratitude to all fans who have supported and loved him and all partners who supported and took care of Reita in his career as the GazettE bassist,” read the statement. According to the website, a memorial service will be held with close relatives only.

Just yesterday a tweet from the bassist’s X Account read, “I hope the GazettE will last forever.” Born on May 27, 1981, Reita (stylized as REITA) was one of the founding members of the group along with Ruki (vocals) and Uruha (lead guitar). The trio had been in other visual kei bands before, but decided this group, formed in Yokohama in 2002, was going to be their last. They then recruited Aoi on rhythm guitar and Yune on drums. In 2003, Yune left and was replaced by Kai from Mareydi Creia.

The Gazette released their debut album, Disorder, in 2004. It peaked at number 19 in the Oricon Charts. They’ve released nine studio albums since then, all of which have reached the top 10. They have played at all of Japan’s major stadiums, including the Budokan and the Tokyo Dome. In 2013, they completed their first world tour. Famous hits by the group include “Leech,” “Distress and Coma” and “Shiver,” which was the opening theme song for the popular anime Kuroshitsuji II (Black Butler II). On December 21, 2022, the band released a 20th anniversary compilation album titled Heterodoxy -Divided 3 Concepts-. One week later, Yune, the group’s former drummer, passed away after a sudden illness. He was also 42.

It’s with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of Edmund Jones — who wrestled Major DeBeers — after a long battle with numerous ailments on Tuesday, April 16. Ed was not only my longest running wrestling protege but my best friend and the best man at my wedding.

Ed made his wrestling debut in 1976 after being trained by Danny Miller. In his first match in Columbia, SC, he lost to the Nighthawk. Initially, he was known as Big Ed Jones as he grew to become a regular on the indy scene in North and South Carolina Indy.

Big Ed Jones was only the first of his many wrestling names, which including countless masked gimmicks, including the Assassin, the Inferno, Superstar Destroyer, Superstar, Masked Menace and others. In the early 1980s, Jones met Rick Link on a show in South Carolina and started working for him as the Patriot, and working under that name, he had a feud with Jay Eagle that filled venues.

Through the years, the 5-foot-10, 260-pound Jones was always known as a solid worker but one with bad knees, stemming from his days playing football in high school. Those knees never got better and in later years, he had to change his style to do less.

In the early 1990s, Jones switched his gimmick to Major DeBeers and went all in. I once wrote that he was my favorite wrestler: “The South African is a man after my own heart. He hates minorities, children, old people, and puppies. The classic old-school heel. The Major’s philosophy of cheating is better than losing is a creed most people can, and should, live by.”

I was at a wrestling show on Sunday in Toronto that I could walk to from my home. At the Destiny card, I reconnected with a number of friends. At one point, someone mentioned that there had been eight different shows in Ontario — including the tribute to Tiberius King/JT Playa Jesse Scott in Niagara Falls — within a three-hour drive.

At the risk of sounding like Old Man Greg, it wasn’t like that back in my day.

Before Ontario wrestling was deregulated, the Ontario Athletic Commission no longer demanding its pound of flesh, it was rare to have more than one show on a night in the 1980s, into the early 1990s.

I bring this up because there was really one wrestling ring to book easily during that time period, and it belonged to one of the first behind-the-scenes friends I ever made in pro wrestling.

“Mac” — who was actually Mervyn McKie — died on Monday, April 15, of heart failure, so he is very much on my mind.

One of the founding members of legendary Australian rock band The Masters Apprentices, Gavin Webb, has died aged 77 after a six-year battle with cancer.

After being in remission for a few years, the bassist died in the Royal Adelaide Hospital on Tuesday afternoon, the band's label confirmed.

The Masters Apprentices were formed in Adelaide in the mid-1960s when forerunners The Mustangs rebranded.

Webb's involvement had humble beginnings, and came about as a result of a 1965 ad placed by his brother, on his behalf, in Adelaide newspaper The News that simply stated: "Student bass player wishes to practise with group".

Arthur “Pooch” Tavares, member of the iconic music group Tavares, has passed away.

His brother, Perry Lee “Tiny” Tavares, posted a photo tribute on his Facebook page Wednesday morning, with the message, "Miss what we had."

On the final photo, depicting Pooch with brother Ralph, who passed away in 2021, he wrote, “Now you two can get the stage ready for us. RI-Paradise.”
