Oh yes, easily, we've had weeks to get over it, but that's not the point. England weren't expected to do well but we did expect them to at least TRY to get out of the group stage, but then who knew Costa Rica would make it so hard for us. We knew Italy & Uruguay would be hard to play against-especially with the toothy chipmunk Suarez but Costa Rica were a major surprise. Still, the Europeans are next in 2 yrs and the qualifying for that starts in September. Can I just say that Australia did very well and Cahill's wonder goal deserves to be recognised.

Just one more thing. I think the world underestimates us British. In times of crisis or great disappointment we just say "ho hum" and sing a quick chorus of 'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life' it does wonders for flagging morale-doubt if ANYONE would be doing that in Brazil about now.

Does the Brit population , in general, give a damn about the Commonwealth Games I don't, never have, I've only ever seen them as an excuse for some Commonwealth countries too feel a bit better for themselves for any failures at The Olympics

I was talking to my missus about this (I'm a brit, she's american), she finds it very funny that the only nations that play cricket internationally are commonwealth, that we 'forced' all these nations to adopt our 'funny little game' so we had someone to play with No brits I know take the commonwealth games that seriously, it's just an excuse for a bit of harmless tub-thumping, imo.

I think you're dead right with your observation about it being a compensation for Commonwealth countries for their Olympic failures.

I can't speak for the entire british population but not one single friend of mine is following the Commonwealth Games, and that includes those - mainly women - who will watch sports tournaments as long as they're "national events" like Cup Finals, the Grand National, and Wimbledon. The Commonwealth Games are of interest neither as a national event nor a sports competition. I sometimes even wonder whether the spectators and audience is made up entirely of the competitors' relatives, friends, and swarms of media folk.

The Commonwealth Games strike me as bogus, a competition between an arbitrary collection of countries, neither truly global nor within a single continent, nor among a small number of countries who are the only ones who play a particular sport at a high level, like the "Six Nations" rugby.
