Default 2017 US College Football thread

First, here is the link to the 2016 US College Football Thread.

Also, the College football rankings: How the preseason AP Top 25 Poll compares to the final poll, from the NCAA site.
From a purely selfish point of view, the season has gotten off to a good start, as San Diego State didn't have a problem with their first game opponent:Kevin Acee Column - SDSU (re-)christens San Diego Stadium by kicking Aggs
Quote:
San Diego State crushed UC Davis 38-17 in front of an announced crowd of 46,132. (Eh. We’ll give it to ‘em. It was SkyShow night.)
It could be legitimately argued that the 24-3 halftime score was disappointing, that the margin should have been greater. Same with the final score, a product of SDSU losing interest and playing everyone as Davis scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to come back from down 38-3. But whatever.
Even with some silly penalties, a turnover that wasn’t caused by any touch and some other gaffes by a young Aztecs team, this wasn’t close in any way. Not for more than the first 49 seconds, at least.

Beat Writer's Story - Aztecs dominate UC Davis in 38-17 win

Quote:
The San Diego State football team walked out Saturday against UC Davis to the most beautiful home field any Aztec has seen in the past half century. An 18-yard wide SD logo was emblazoned in red and black at midfield. The west end zone read SAN DIEGO STATE in black letters with white outline. The east end zone read AZTECS in similar style. Mountain West logos were at the 25-yard lines.
As nice as it was, SDSU coach Rocky Long was concerned it would be more cluttered, with maybe a kitchen sink or two scattered about.
Long was expecting everything and anything from new UC Davis coach Dan Hawkins, whose Aggies didn’t give a hint what they were doing — they never even named their starters — in the season opener for both teams.
Quote:
Concerns about inexperience on the offensive line — which included a pair of redshirt freshmen among four new starters — were unfounded. At least for this game. The SDSU defense will be a work in progress as it breaks in several new starters. It did start strong, however, when linebacker Jay Henderson tipped a Maier pass on the game’s first drive and safety Tariq Thompson, a true freshman who was playing in the St. Augustine secondary a year ago, came away with an interception.

The Aggies’ biggest play of the game came on their first play of the game — a 41-yard pass from quarterback Jake Maier to wide receiver Keelan Doss.
Hopefully, they got a picture of it.
SDSU dominated from the second play on, leading to a 38-17 win before a SkyShowcrowd of 46,132 at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.
[/QUOTE]San Diego State Football-UC Davis Postgame Notes

Not counting a big picture at the start, there are 3 screens of various notes on team streaks and individual accomplishments. One thing that I couldn't find was the stats after 3 quarters. They must have been very lopsided, as the Aztecs had a 38-3 lead with 10 minutes left in the game, but the 'scrubs' couldn't hold off UC Davis' first string.

*****

Next two games are against big non-conference opponents: at Arizona State, and hosting Stanford. By then we should have more of an idea of what kind of team this is.

I watched the Georgia Tech-Tennessee game last night and it was a doozy. Tech dominated the first half and looked like they were going to run away with it. The Volunteers rallied in the second half and tied the game with less that 2 minutes left to send the game into overtime. In the second OT, the Yellowjackets went for two to win the game, but the Vols pressured the GT QB into a wobbly pass that fell short of the receiver's hands to secure a 42-41 win.

And to top it off, my Buffalo State Bengals beat Bridgewater State, a D-III playoff team in 2016, to open the season on a high note.

Our other local team, the UB Bulls, took a 17-7 loss to Minnesota. At least UB had a better showing against a Big Ten team than other MAC (Kent State and Akron against Clemson and Penn State respectively) teams did.

My niece is a freshman at Bowling Green, who lost to Michigan State last Saturday. We facetimed with her yesterday. Her father asked if the campus was in mourning over the loss. Her reply was, "They lost?"

The San Diego State running game looked good again in their 30-20 win over ASU; but their passing attack was woeful (longest gain on pass into flat to Rashaad Penny; an earlier 50yd TD pass was called back on penalty.)

Kudos to Penny, who had a 95yr run, a 99yd kickoff return (6th of his career), and the above mentioned pass in the flat that he took 30+ yards for a TD. He had 216 yards rushing on 18 carries. Our placekicker set a team record for most consecutive field goals inside the 50 – nice after a long string of previous failures by earlier kickers.

Next week they will face an angry Stanford team (who was ranked #14) that was beaten 42-24 by #6 USC, who broke things open early in the 4th quarter.

Even though Boise State is SDSU's conference rival, I was sorry to see them lose in 47-44triple-overtime to Washington State - they had to play without their starting QB after a 1st quarter injury . A win by them would have helped with the conference's reputation – They and the Aztecs have been the only consistently winning teams for some years now.

Default A very pleasant surprise, indeed...

Before the game, I had thought San Diego State had only a small chance of defeating #16 Stanford, as they had what appeared to be much the better quarterback and as good (or better) a running back and defense. Boy, was I surprised! The Aztec QB, who had not done much at all in the previous games (much to head coach Rocky Long's displeasure), outplayed his counterpart - no fumbles or interceptions, while the Stanford QB had 1 of the first and 2 of the second (although the last INT was in the last minute of the game.) Something the team did that helped immensely (other than the turnovers) was time of possession: 41 minutes to 19...

Lots of firsts for the team due to this win.

Recap of SDSU-Stanford game, with links to the stats and notes...

Default Sports Illustrated gives SDSU the 'Kiss of Death'

The Aztecs are (at least for this week), selected by SI to be the one to make a major bowl (see the quote below). I'm afraid that they will stumble at Air Force this week, even though they have a current 5-game win streak against them. Then they take on Northern Illinois, who just upset Nebraska. And later they will have to meet Boise State, who handed them a bad loss the last time they met in 2014. SDSU is 2-2 vs Boise, but the wins were by 2 and 3 points, while the losses were thrashings.

Default Another game, another *not* ho-hum one...

Pouring rain, very heavy rains and a 90+ minute delay due to lightning strikes (perfect hazard when playing against Air Force ) were not enough to keep SDSU from getting a win that meant the team would move up in the ranks to #19 in the polls. Unfortunately, the other teams in the Mountain West Conference have been losing a lot of games, so any wins in conference after next week will not help a further rise in the rankings - unless they are all blow-outs.

3 things we learned in the Aztecs' win over Air Force

1. Overcoming adversity pays dividends.

2. SDSU finds way to win when playing at less than its best.

3. You don’t fool with Mother Nature.

Default UCLA vs Texas A&M

It was the worst of times, It was the best of times! A tale of two teams.

Yes I am dyslexic but thats not why I wrote that backwards. I am a UGE ( thats Trump speak for huge) UCLA fan and the first half was the worst of times and it doesn't get any better than the second half.

I still want to know who stole our uniforms and played the first half. They looked like The Little Sisters of the Poor Middle School Intramural flag Football Team. One things for sure the Bruins Defense tackled like a middle school flag football team in the first half.

I got lucky I was going switch to a baseball game (I don't remember whether it was the Angels, Dodgers, or Red Sox my 3 teams) but the baseball game was blow-out against the team I was rooting so I put the Bruin game back on. I was that close to missing the second biggest comeback in NCAA Football ever! I screamed so loud when they scored the winning TD I think they heard me in the Rose Bowl and I live about 150 miles north of Pasadena!
What a Game!

UCLA will have to outscore their opponents if they want to have any chance of winning. So far, I don't see that happening as the defense is pretty porous.

The finish of the Penn State-Iowa game was pretty damn good too. The Hawkeyes took a four point lead on the Nittany Lions with 1:42 left in the 4th quarter. PSU QB Trace McSorely led the Lions on a 12 play, 80 yard drive, scoring the winning TD on 4th down with :04 seconds on the clock. A heartbreaking loss for the Hawkeye faithful.

On the local scene, the UB Bulls evened their record at 2-2 with a 34-31 victory over the Lane Kiffen-led Florida Atlantic Owls. My Buff State Bengals rallied from a 21-6 deficit to beat the RPI Engineers 33-21, giving them a 3-0 record on the season.
