Where I live I only remember kids twice doing the rounds on Halloween. I know an American chick and she never had any kids in her 15 years here going for treats. It's a city thing here but it's only cause it's trendy to do. Grocery stores do sell carving pumpkins trying to make a buck but it won't catch on. It makes no sense for us to do it.

It's too bad. It's such a big thing in America. There are big Halloween office parties and Halloween parties away from work where the adults dress up in the most elaborate costumes and drink and eat and dance. Then there are the millions of kids all over the U.S. who dress up in costumes after they get home from school and go out either with their friends or an adult family member and go from house to house and into flats and bring home huge shopping bags full of all kinds of candy, gum, and even money.

The only snotty brats banging on doors in Austria are those dressed as the Three Kings on Christmas, singing "Silent Night" until you open the door. I just play some old school thrash metal and they're gone.

We use to have Guy Fawkes Night when I was little...until one kid too many blew a thumb off. We still take all the grandkids down the beach to let off under the counter fireworks...just with more supervision than we had.

Those were fun days, I can remember the local milk bar selling fireworks

Then when you couldn't legally buy them in Victoria we used to stock up in the ACT before Bathurst each year and take a large amount up to our camping spots on top of the mountain....

The ladies love Halloween and kids can always get behind a bag full of candy. We don't see much of it in our city, but it is still a big deal in the suburbs.

Fortunately our neighbours are a lovely couple of Chinese descent who own a couple of Reject stores and he's involved in a Chinese New Year committee. They get us all the crackers I want for next to nothing.

Not to worry. In a week or so, all the Halloween stuff will be gone from the shelves and Christmas will have taken it's place. And then Easter eggs and hot cross buns in January.
