I have a number of armed neighbors.

However, if there ever is some sort of civil disturbance, I do believe I will be one of the first killed so that my house can be ransacked.

Why?? Do you boast about your weapons or is your house so nice it would attract raiders attention? If so iron bar your windows and bar your doors with L brackets and 2/4's.

While I do not have as many guns as you do any one breaking into my house is in for a surprise.

If someone wants to get into your house, they will get into your house. An alarm system, large safes and a loaded gun are among my defenses. My neighbors are too. I have had a large number of law enforcement serve a search warrant on my house, been a shooter for the thirty years I have lived in the house and have not kept my hobby a secret. So it is fairly obvious that it is known to lots of people. I know many gun owners who are well known as gun owners, I don't know any who have been attacked.

I should probably get a dog. however the dogs in my neighborhood already bother me enough.

If I lived in a secluded area, with no visible neighbors, I would worry more.

In your situation I think I would feel very paranoid all of the time.

I feel lucky to live in an area where violent crime and property crime is low to nonexistent.

My principal enemies are not black or Mexican gangbangers, but... rabbits.

After viewing the damage those furry little bastards have done to my backyard recently, I was seriously considering buying a 22 and some of those low-powered CB cap rounds and taking a few surreptitious shots at them.

I think my neighbors would rat me out though, so I reconsidered.

A Ruger 10-22 and some of those hi-capacity magazines you can buy for them would double nicely as a home defense gun, and you wouldn't get put on a police watch list for having it.

Based on the experiences of my youth, I would not trust a pellet gun to kill anything larger than a bird.

I guess they make some pretty powerful ones these days, but they cost a lot of money, and are fairly loud too. I'd get in almost as much trouble being caught shooting a pellet gun as a 22 anyhow. I'd certainly get fined and have my pellet gun confiscated if the police showed up.

Traps and poison are out, as I'd probably end up killing my neighbor's dog.

What I could really use is a Terminator in the guise of a cat rather than a human, a FE-101 instead of a T-101. I could turn it loose in the backyard and it would patrol relentlessly, staying within my property line as per instructions, and terminating every rabbit it could find with its steel fangs.

Going to have to wait awhile for that.

If you can do it you can live trap them and then kill them. Of course once you have a cute little bunny trapped would you have the heart??

When I was much younger, someone's pet white rabbit had escaped into my mom's yard and was eating her and my aunt's vegetables. (both homes are close together) My mom and my aunt cornered me and ordered me to kill the rabbit. (It ran from them when they got too close and hid under a wood pile) Her exact words to me were "What good are your guns if you can't kill something for me?" I said that shooting within city limits was a crime and what if a ricochet hit someone? They just ganged up on me and screamed I was worthless. Having two old Asian ladies insult you for more than a few minutes, I couldn't take it. So I shot it with a Charter Arms Explorer pistol - 22 long rifle.

That rabbit death scream - "EEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh" still can be heard in my dreams.

If I had eaten it instead of burying it, I'd probably feel better.

Still can't look at a rabbit without thinking of it.

That is something I for got to put in my post. Rabbit's are vocal at death. This surprises those who are not aware of it.
When I lived in the hills with my Akita's I always knew when the guy across the valley was butchering his rabbit's. The dogs got very upset by the sounds that I could not hear.

Perhaps you can get a pet Mink.

This rabbit's death scream at 1:40 doesn't seem as high pitched as the one I shot.
