No it ended when Ben Elton got Benny Hill kicked off the box. The whole "Alternative comedy" movement killed it, apparently "Alternative" means unfunny.

There was great stuff and there were absolute turkeys. For every Allo Allo or Last Of The Summer Wine, there was a Father Dear Father or an On The Buses
My favourites will always be Dad's Army and Goodnight Sweetheart..

Been reading through this thread now and again.
It goes 'Off-Topic" quite often... into member's fave comedians and a HEAVY Reliance on TV COMEDY.
That's fine ~ imo ~ that's how we keep up and can comment.
It doesn't however scarcely cover film and writings that come from
British Comedy

Monty Python movies / films for example ?
Compare them with "On The Buses"

Earlier in this thread was a lot of 'aggro' against Sacha Baron Cohen,
~ he has subsequently been given NUMEROUS Awards and praise
~ From Cannes to the Oscars.
Born out of television and Comedy that many despised...

Brit Com is almost alive, but struggling.
Brit Com was nearly KILLED by the Carry-On's and the "Busses"

A more diverse and INTELLIGENT group of writers and artists arose.

Elton / Python etc / Curtis created a bigger and more successful
Brit Comedy

The Brit-UK local Homophobia/Sexism/Racism and every snide 'joke' about non-white people... became DEAD-IN-The-WATER.
It took a few years before that happened

Perhaps the time before UK PUNK... 4/5 years. ?
The Rise of more intelligent Comedy ... 4/5 years ..?

The Dinosaurs were gone by 1979 in film land.

The next Decade produced the BEST of Brit Comedy, since
Will Hay - Film
Tony Hancock - TV & Film

They had No racism... No Homophobia ...No snide

A truly Straight-Line, to the 1980s and the Global achievements of Brit Humour and Brit Writing and Brit COMEDIC SUCCESS

I make no apologies for picking a television programme as the ending point of British comedy - Television is the one medium that almost all of us have in our homes.

The 50s to 80's saw a great spread of Radio comedy too, now that has gone, some like Hancock, made the move over to the screen, but many remained on the airwaves only.

The hour at night that was filled by great humour such at the News Huddlines is now filled with insipid multicultural "tunes".

Love or Hate the Carry Ons, they filled cinemas in an era where television was only emerging,

As commented elsewhere, many of us are left cold by "Alternative" humour, and would much prefer a trditional laugh out loud comedy, even if the laugh is on us.
