One major volcanic eruption dwarfs everything we have ever put into the atmosphere.
We are in an interglacial period, we have warmed up from the last Ice Age and still have some way to go before we descend into the next.So the overall trend in our climate will be for temperatures to rise and there's nothing we can do abput this.The planet is still cooler than it was 1000 years ago because there was a Little Ice Age in the middle ages.There are other warming and cooling cycles, some caused by the Earth's movement and some because of solar fluctuations.It's impossible to sort out what's done what so the assumption that recent warming was man made is plainly guesswork.We have seen nothing outside normal statistcal variation.

Well, the seasons have changed. The ice caps are melting. What is causing this i'm not sure. Mankind is bound to have some effect, but it's over-egged imho. I'm more curious about what's going on in "area 51" & did man really go to the moon, or was it filmed in a secret film studio??!!

Glad to see that alot of the people on here haven't bought into the brainwashing of "Global Warming" as said it is the natural cycle of the earth.

Some scientists say that on that day all our planets will align and as the sun crosses the centre of the milky way the earth will then begin to reverse it's polarity. This happens (scientific fact!) every so often and this is where we get the stories of great floods as in Noah and others as well as Atlantis sinking beneath the waves!

The American government has been digging underground cities (about 200) for decades, these are up to 2 miles deep in the ground. These have been built to house all the top brass of American society to shelter them from what is coming, abit like what happened in the film Deep Impact but there will be no lottery!

A guy called Phil Schneider was doing the lecture tour of the US telling the American public all about these underground bases he helped build some 15 years ago and got himself killed for exposing them! If you have emule or the like, do a search with his name and you'll find some of his speeches on there from 1995. Interesting stuff!

PS Virtually all the worlds religious calenders finish on that date too, 21/12/2012

Let's get one thing straight: We're talking about catastrophic climate change (c.c.c.) over a period of about a 100 years in the future. There's been global warming going on, off and on, just as there's been global cooling. That's normal over a period of several decades or more.

Sorry, but this argument demonstrates the core of the problem: We are too much laymen to judge the apparent proof, and things develop too slowly, to be able check that credibly right now. All we can do is present facts, but we can't really compare them, because we don't have the time and the expertise to read all the science reports; summarizing the facts is difficult when you're talking about a predictive model for 100 years.

E.g. here in Berlin they've got a weather station which has the longest record of in-city temperature measurement in the world, roughly 300 years! And it shows no significant increase over this period; variations in the average away from the 300-year norm take place over decades, and this is probably what we have right now - a cycle of moving up from the norm only to return in 10-20 years' time.

I'm surprised & heartened to see the majority of posts here sceptical of c.c.c.. I'm so tired of arguing against the "environmentalist religion" mentioned in the Weather Channel clip in the previous post - thanks for that link! A good book for sceptics to read, BTW, is "Cool it" by Lomborg.

Basically I've reduced my position on c.c.c. to the following challenge to the "believers" (first published by author Michael Crichton about 4 years ago): "Predict the global mean temperature accurately (i.e. within a tenth of a degree Fahrenheit or so) in 10 years' time; then, in 10 years' time, I'll know whether your models are accurate and can be trusted." Until then I'm assuming climate change will not be more catastrophic than before in the middle term, and am voting for my tax dollars to go to more promising projects (incl. some environmental ones).

i thought i would add my teopence worth to this subject.

global warming (now called climate change) is happening, but it is not down to man or our impact on the environment. i won't quote tons of facts and figures as their is plenty of info out there on the web. i will just point out these observations of my own though.

1. april 2008 was the hottest april for over 140 years - but no politicians or commentators asked what caused the previous hottest april 140 years ago. there were no cars or power stations back then.

2. in the 2007 - 2008 ski season, many resorts were complaining of the lack of snow and politicians jumped on the bandwagon saying this was due to global warming. this year many ski resorts opened two to four weeks earlier than normal due to record snow falls. their was silence from our politicians on this little fact.

3. the earths weather patterns are a natural event. we have cold periods and hot periods. one question that the tree huggers and politicians can't answer is this "if global warming is man made, then what caused the last ice age to melt?".

4. other people who have replied in this thread are right about taxes. the global warming threat has been used by politicians to raise taxes, especially in britain. in 1997 tony blair said that one of the fundamental points of new labour (new labour / same problems) was that we will not raise the level of income tax, so they had to introduce many new taxes to compensate for this and global warming was a convenient way of doing this.

personally i believe that its a natural event. there is nothing we can do to stop it happening, so i don't worry about it. lifes to short - now will someone please post new vid clips of virginia felsom, mille minchen and pat wynn.

I remember reading in the new Scientist in the early 1960s that oil was due to run out in 1984.There is plenty of oil left but of course it won't be as cheap to extract it.North Sea oil was uneconomic to extract until the 1970s price hike when suddenly there was a bonanza.
Didn't know there was oil in Afghanistan though.

There isn't, knobby109. But there is a pipe line from the Caspian sea which runs through Afghanistan bringing natural gas.

A deal was originally made many years ago with the Taliban to build & secure this pipeline. However, the Taliban 'couldn't deliver as agreed' - this was before 9/11. Now the pipe line has been completed & the US have milatry bases there.

Coincidence? - I don't believe in coincidences, especially not on the Grand Chess Board.
