Easing us gently back onto topic, what's even more amazing is that humanity had come so far well before Marx lay down on a comfy sofa in Engel's mansion and started prattling on about how it would be great if others could work on his behalf.

I wonder if Marx ever had a real honest-to-goodness job involving manual labor ever in his life.

I wonder what he'd be doing if he were alive in today's world? I suppose he would be one of those seedy leftist professors in a college somewhere, filling the kids' heads full of BS.

The answer is no. He was an intellectual. His mother supported him in the early years. Then he eked out a living from his writings and occasional hand outs from Engels and Jenny's family until the royalties from volume one of Das Kapital made him comfortably well off.

Marx was a singularly impractical man in his personal life. Also, like many 19th century men he drank enough to bring questions of alcoholism to the table.

I had to read bits of it it at university and it certainly didn't strike me as something that could be turned into a massive Hollywood blockbuster.

I read some of it a long time ago. It struck me as the sort of work that could suck you in if you "wanted to believe", sort of like the bible.

It was a massive best seller in Germany and in Russia, where revolutionary fervor was quite high.

There is a lot of irony in Marx's life. He was heavily influenced by his wife Jenny's father. Jenny's family were noble aristocrats, but her father advocated radical socialism. What little earnings Marx had mid-century came as a correspondent for the New York Daily Tribune. Finally, the royalties from Das Kapital made him almost wealthy.
