I've also met Vanna White.
I still have the issue of Playboy she autographed when she made an appearance at the Safeway in 1987. |

Abbie Hoffman, at C.W. Post College on Long Island, in the early '70s. He shared a joint with me and wrote "Thanks for the dynamite" in my copy of Revolution for the Hell of It. (Honest, officer, I didn't give him any.)
Thanks for that, ol' buddy! Rest in peace.

A couple of years back, I was rather rudely waved away by Damian Lewis while he was walking through Piccadilly Circus with a mobile 'phone at his ear (not actually doing any talking on it, just pretending he was taking a very important call). He'd only just appeared on a UK 'breakfast' TV show the previous day saying how he enjoyed being recognised in the street. Rude cu(rra)nt, I thought.

Oh, to add a showbiz one...
I was walking down Haymarket after a lunchtime leaving drink when I thought I saw Mark Williams of the Fast Show heading the opposite way. Sunglasses, head down... So emboldened by the booze (tho' not wey-hey drunk) I said "Excuse me, aren't you Mark Williams?" Peering warily over the sunnies he said.... "Yesss...." So I said 'Thought you were great in Art' [the play]. He beams, and in that Brummie accent says, 'ow, roit, cheers very mooch' and shook my hand... |

I keep remembering more, but as these happened in New York City these are more "encounters' than actual meets because the unwritten rule is unless you want to be set upon as a clueless rube from out of town you do not fuss over celebrities in public...
Robert Urich, American actor (SWAT, Vega$, Spenser: For Hire) in the lobby of a Broadway Theater. Kathleen Turner, American Actress best known for "Body Heat" In a tiny club. Absolutely gorgeous. She got up to sing with the band and immediately had three paparazzi in her face snapping photos. Finally, talking to a mate of mine who played solo guitar in a restaurant. Only in NYC could you have a restaurant that only served dessert and didn't open up 'till 10 at night. Guy at the next table gets up, waves to the owner and leaves. It was Al Pacino. "Yeah" shrugs my mate, "He comes in here all the time."

What I really learned from the whole experience, is that if you're going to visit somewhere, go after a natural disaster. I went out to California 2 weeks after the Northridge quake. My older sister went with me and we flew into LAX (one of the busiest airports in the world) at 10:30PM on a Saturday and it was like flying into Buffalo at 3:00AM on a Sunday. At our hotel on the Sunset Strip, we were upgraded to a mini-suite. We had a bigger kitchen in our suite than my aunt had in her luxury condo here in Buffalo. It was my first time in California and we had a great time. Oh yeah, I almost met the late William Windom during the taping of the shows. At that time, Jepoardy! was taped on the old Desilu lot. We were on lunch break, and Mr. Windom happend to be on the lot (he may have been on a break for the taping of Murder She Wrote) and he came in to where we were and talked to a few of the contestants. He was politely asked to leave since we weren't allowed outside contact during the taping. I would guess that it's the same way on all game shows. They don't want the appearance of cheating as that's a federal offense.

I met Tony Randall (Odd Couple) many years ago when I was working at a hotel in St. Louis, MO. I was a busboy at the time. He was very nice. I would tell of other REALLY famous people I've met but Paul McCartney once told me to never be a name-dropper.

I worked as a morning DJ for about 7 years (1983-1990) and met a good number of famous people. To get a better look click the pictures. Chuck Mangione - I was the MC for the show and met him back stage. He was a very friendly guy. Signed this poster for the whole station. David Copperfield - Also MC of the show. I remember him as being very quiet and aloof. Great show though. I have a collection of autographs from this same period but I can't get a decent picture. I will work on it because there are some great autographs in it .....Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld and others. |

Would you be willing to mention the actress's name you ushered around? She sounds like a very down to earth person and your post has sparked my curiosity! |
