My thoughts on Oscar 2011 ...

I managed to stay up and watch the whole thing and even at just over a 3 hour running time, it still seemed to drag. I'm glad to see that the awards were spread out several films and that no one ran away with them all.

Favorite Moments
The first was when Kirk Douglas came out to present the Best Supporting Actress award and he caught a look of co-host Anne Hathaway (looking gorgeous) and said "Where were you when I was making movies ? Wow" I first thought what a dirty old man, but later thought he's still got a good eye for the ladies.

The second was when Billy Crystal came out on stage to a standing "O" and instantly quipped "Now where was I". It brought out the first true bit of humor of the night. Note to the producers for next year: Bring back Billy no matter what it takes !!

The Hosts
Like last year, there were two and this time they decided to skew younger with James Franco & Anne Hathaway. At first it seemed to go okay, but as the night wore on James Franco seemed get grow more wooden and it looked like he was not enjoying himself.

On the other hand, Anne tried to have fun with her hosting duties, even launching into a short song about not being in a production number with an unnamed Aussie (Hugh Jackman). She looked radiant in every gown that she wore.

The Ending
Usually after the Best Picture award, the hosts wrap up and say goodnight. But this year, an amazing group of kids from P.S. 22 came out and sang "Over The Rainbow". It was a surprise and a wonderful treat.
The one thing the producers got right.

As to my picks listed in post #4, I got 16 out of 24 right. About my average.

It is interesting to note that the award is the same as the name of the organisation and yet Oscar isn't-the organisation is AMPTAS(Academy of Motion Picture. Television & Arts & Sciences) but you don't win an AMPTAS you win an Oscar.

Well it's that time of year again when the traditional lead up to the main backslapping occurs. The BAFTAs and the OSCARs will be with us again soon, the nominations for BAFTA were last week and today the OSCAR nominations were read out. No surprises that 'The Artist' received 10 yet Martin Scorcese's HUGO(ostensibly a kids' film) has received 11 and Best Actress nominees include Meryl Streep for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in 'The Iron Lady' (or as we called her back then the mad old bat) and George Clooney & Brad Pitt amongst the nominees for Best Actor-could be their year?? Brits are represented too with War Horse up for Best Film and Gary Oldman for Best Actor for 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy'

There were some good moments in the BAFTA ceremony. Cuba Gooding Jr did a small tribute to Whitney Houston, Meryl Streep managed to lose a shoe as she came up to receive her award for 'The Iron Lady', Hugh Jackman & Russell Crowe came out acting all fake Australian ( a bit like those two clowns in the Fosters ad) Jacko! Rusty! call this a f***ing opera house? Jean Dujardin mentioned this country by name-checking "Sir Lawrence Olivier, William Webb Ellis and Benny Hill"!!! Mon dieu!

THE OSCARs 2012 Winners.
As you will see The Artist and Hugo dominated, Meryl Streep got her third and although no British actors won anything we did win one or two for Hugo collaborations and 'The Iron Lady' was ostensibly a British film and that won a few Oscars too. Gary Oldman overlooked for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy & Harry Potter failed to get anything too. Disappointing for Brits but not entirely unpredictable-we have off years.
