That W10 plane made me laugh

I have W7 on my old Alienware laptop and once tried W10, then quickly reverted back to 7 (with a lot of problems as reverting to 7 reeeally went wrong). Now i'm happy that i did, because since there was a big W10 update some time ago, a friend's laptop (same model as mine) got bricked from it.

Not that i especially hate W10, my newer laptop came with it, and it is ok, i guess.

Windows Defender Blocking Installations of Downloaded Apps

Ever since, when I download a program (ex: VLC MEDIA PLAYER or GOOGLE CHROME) as soon as I double click it, this message pops up:

"YOUR ORGANIZATION USED WINDOWS DEFENDER CONTROL TO BLOCK THIS APP"

There's a possibility that the SmartScreen option is on that's why you're unable to install downloaded apps. Let's try to turn it off and see if it helps. See the steps below:

Open Windows Defender Security Center from your Start menu, desktop, or taskbar.
Click on the App and browser control button on the left side of the window.
Click on Off in the Check apps and files section.

eventual answer

In my case, i was able to resolve it by following someone's suggestion here that you turn off secure boot in your bios...that got rid of the bug (after re-starting) and once the bug was gone, i was able to turn secure boot back on, and the bug remained gone...That worked for many people here too...

Thank you Buttsie but I don't think that's the issue in my case. The software I tried to install was from DVDs. The installation would go thru but the software then wouldn't work under Windows 10.

My job has been frantic and stressful this month and I just don't have the time, patience or energy to keep fucking around with getting everything ported over from XP to W10. So the W10 machine is turned off and sitting on a corner of my desk while I do my usual stuff on the XP machine. For those (still few) things that I need or want to do that require W10 I will just turn it on for those. Over time, as I have the time and money, I will slowly build up the W10 machine. It took me years and a fair amount of money spent on software to get my XP machine to where it is and doing what I want how I want. I was just unrealistically hoping that I would be able to port at least most of my XP setup directly to W10 but MS has nerfed the backwards compatibility of W10. Deliberately from what I understand.

I wouldn't piss on Windows 10 if it was on fire. I built a machine from scratch,
installed Widows 10, and found that it was basically made for an Iphone and
touchscreen, with many other problems including most importantly, the one
that DT mentioned.....a great many of the programs used with previous OS's,
no longer working. Meaning of course buying complete new programs (if they
are even made to work with 10) and the various headaches that come with
trying to learn new programs that in all likelyhood, don't do the things that
you want them to do as your old programs did. After a month fighting this
bastard, I said to hell with it, and changed to Win 7, which works better than
I could have ever dreamed.

A wiseman once said always keep your old OS / hardware intact when the new OS is on you

Better yet get some old refurbished / 2nd hand el cheapo PC to trial the new OS on

Nothing surer that a software company like MS will be moving heaven and hell to make
old software obsolete.

THis is, in an alternate way, what I'm going to do. I've been struggling with W10 too, came back to 7 as it was easy for my needs: I'm a pro musician/producer using old daws and plugins, Cubase 5.1 for instance in 32bits. It works fine so far under 7 64bits, but then with 10 it's been... a pain in the ass. Had to re-instal everything again.

As the actual pc is dying (guess it's the PSU, but it can also be the MB), what I'm going to do is to get a refurb pc with a more recent configuration loaded with 10, but not too much recent either ! and swap the OS hdd.

The key is to find the right CPU in the refurb pc to keep XP or 7 still working. In my case I've choosen a 2011 HP Elite 8200 with a quad core i5 2400 with 16g ram. I've got a Vista 32bits that won't work on it though, but who cares about vista 32b nowadays !! the better option for you would be to get a family premium W7 on another disk, disable internet access on it, and keep W10 for other tasks involving an internet access. Anything that works in your XP will actually work just fine with 7 64bits premium family edition. I insist on Family premium, cos' it's the cheaper one with max ram capabilities.

My actual machine is a very old (well to me!) Acer X1700 loaded with Intel Duo Core e2200 and 4g ram, I guess I'll experience a huge difference ! I've been able to mix and master 2 albums with that old machine this year, but I guess the long hours spent on it... killed it.

Yes, That HP is probably going to be a good buy. even though the i5-2400 is a few generations old, it still screams. I have the i5-4440 in an HP unit and there really isn't much difference from the 2400 in the IPC (instructions per cycle) .. The only bummer i5's were the first generation.

I went with Windows 8.1 myself, as I remember from the olden days how the experts advised to stay one Revision behind, If you add the classic shell add-on, it really is a fine OS, if you must use windows.

I may give Win10 a go after the next Windows release happens...

Win8.1 is available from the MS site easily (the win7 iso is tough, it will reject, but the win8.1 sails)

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...ad/windows8ISO

You just need to create a file and put it in a certain folder to bypass activation.

https://superuser.com/questions/4984...-a-product-key

The torrent networks are saturated with Windows downloads of every type, but i can't really ascertain how that works in the end.

I am a Linux man myself, I only use Windows if i have to and even then i sure as hell am not going to connect windows to the internet. It is good to have it in dual boot so you can use it for Windows exclusive programs. and i got stuck with a few of those unfortunately
