Yes - that book was surprisingly good, much better than I expected.

Currently re-reading "The Lord of the Rings" for the first time in 17 years. Maybe I'll even give the lore collections like "The Silmarillion" another shot after that. They were far too stuffy for my taste when last I tried.

"Inherent Vice" by Thomas Pynchon. Just saw the movie, liked it, bought the book.

One of a handful of very readable books about Edward 'Mick' Mannock - Christmas generally finds me leafing through WWI aviation biographies. I blame childhood 'Biggles' reading...

Have You read "King of Air Fighters" by Ira "Taffy" Jones ? Jones flew with Mannock and though His book is coloured by the fact that He worshipped His mentor,It is very informative.Mannock's own published diaries are also well worth reading.

I have indeed - I own them both. The 'Mick' book draws on them both as reference, and makes for a well-informed relaxing read - it was the first book about Mannock I picked up, many years back.
I have a shelf full of WWI biogs and diaries; I never fail to be impressed and moved by the resourcefulness and spirit of some of these gents, who in fact were generally very young men indeed. I'm always left wondering how I'd have coped in their place. The diaries in particular make fascinating reading. There's others I'd recommend: 'Open Cockpit' byArthur Gould Lee, 'Wind in the Wires' by Grinnell-Milne and 'Into the Blue' by Norman Macmillan are all worth picking up, as well as my favourite, the classic 'Flying Fury': the diaries of James McCudden, which I'm guessing you'll have read?

I certainly have read both McCudden's book and Wind In The Wires.One is struck by McCudden's cheery ruthlessness and Grinnell Milne's cold blooded hatred for the Germans who mistreated Him while He was a POW.
