Default Where do the original photos go after the shoots are used in magazines?

I've often wondered what happens to the pictures after the photographers are done with the sets. Do they have to give the originals to the magazines that use them? Do they just get thrown in a drawer some where and lost? Is there any resource to locate the old originals online?

I attempted to track down one of my favorite models photographers using his name and I was able to get to a studio in Britan via email. The daugher of the guy wasn't interested at any price.

She also said that he was now up in age and that was pretty much that.

I've seen a few slides come across on Ebay, but they were not the era that I seek which is late eighties to about 1995. You would have to monitor that site non stop and go through thousands of 70's stuff just to maybe find originals.

Those clear originals are virtually high def even by todays standards. The magazines from the day are on such crappy paper and the mass produced methods of the day don't do any justice. The slides that I bought are amazing examples.

Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated in advance.

Cheers.

Different depending on the magazines. With Playboy and Penthouse, the magazine had staff photographers, and generally owned the photos. The original shots, moreover, weren't themselves used -- back in the day. They were extensively retouched, and all this sits in their archives. Playboy has had at least two auction of material from their archives -- one at Butterfields and another at Christies.

Most other magazines just license stuff from photographers, who keep their own archives . . . often this will show up for sale.

All of this is beside the point for digital. When you download a hi res image from, say Met Art, you have more or less what the photographer has

You might check back every so often with that photographer. Send him a flattering note. . . collectors (and professional dealers) cultivate sources like that. The guy who isn't ready to sell today, might entertain an offer tomorrow. Stuff that's embarassing to his his wife or kids, might just be a happy source of ready cash to his grandkids.

Stuff comes on the market like this all the time. You're entirely right about the difference in quality between the slides and the printing. Only Playboy and Penthouse -- so far as I know-- have made attempts to rescan original art, rather than just the magazine. Take Nancy Suiter, for example-- there's just a few photos of her, mostly in some pretty poorly printed magazines. Somewhere there once was, and perhaps still is, a nicely exposed slide

It's not just the originals of the photo's that made it into the magazines you want - but all those that didn't! In the cost of setting up a shoot; hiring a model, studio costs, travel costs, staff costs etc., the price of film was relatively cheap so you would expect there to be at least 100 photo's taken in any one set you see in a mag. Granted, many feelance photographers would have 'sold' picture rights to several magazines in different countries, but even then there must be huge archives of un-published material. Human nature being what it is, these were probably stored but not necserarily index carefully. I read somewhere that the Allums have looked for their shoots of Linda Lusardi but haven't found them (yet?) and those guys are/were professionals and know what the value of those shots would be today. Luckily we do get additional pics turning up now and then and from the British standpoint we often see far more than we ever got in the magazines. Happy hunting!

Several months ago a set of Nancy Suiter slides was sold on eBay, the seller was not the photographer but had come into possession of a large number of slides of numerous mid/late '70s models produced by at least two photographers.

I have a huge near-obsession with one model in particular, Jordan West, who was in PH in August of 2002, has 6 sets on T*isty's, 4 on E&rl Mi()er, 2 on DD, and had several, including B/G, on a now defunct site. I made contact with the photographer from the defunct site, asking if he had outtakes from her shoots, and he offered to sell me outtakes from each set for $1000 per set. Way out of my price range.

Wow that's a lot for some pictures! It is art though in my opinion (as are women in general) so perhaps it warrants that kind of money.

I think I'd pay that if I could get a treasure of my favorite gal. Ain't love grand.

As a follow-up I've gone into the massive photo's for sale through Ebay. There are like 15,000 pictures.

Now I remember why I don't do that. There is no separator to filter out the gay material in there. Another great non mechanism by Ebay. There are some very cool pictures of the ladies, but I can't take seeing naked guys no matter what! Gross!

I don't care what gays do, but I don't want to see that even to find my favorite gals.
