I hadn't thought to ask this before: do the universities/colleges in your country have football (soccer) teams that play competitive schedules? Do the coaches (managers?) of those teams last very long? I ask because of an article in our city newspaper.

Seamus McFadden: USD's ageless soccer wonder

Quote:
The University of San Diego has had an intercollegiate men’s soccer program for 39 seasons. It has had one head coach.Think about that for a moment.
For that, the university can thank the foresight of Tom Burke for hiring Seamus McFadden to start the program in 1979, and the longevity and work ethic and recruiting prowess and tactical acuity and teaching skill and raw competitiveness and nurturing demeanor of McFadden himself as he nears the conclusion of his 39th, and final, season as head coach
Quote:
McFadden ranks eighth among active Div. I coaches in career victories with 384. He’s been West Coast Conference coach of the year nine times and reached the NCAA Tournament 14 times. He’s coached nine all-Americans and 21 WCC players of the year. He reached the NCAA final in 1992 and the Elite Eight in 2002. He knocked off No. 1-ranked teams four times, most recently in UCLA’s last visit to Torero Stadium – a 1-0 decision in 2014 before a crowd of 4,432, the largest to watch a college soccer game in San Diego.
Sunday’s game against UCLA originally was scheduled to be played in Los Angeles, but Bruins coach Jorge Salcedo agreed to move it to Torero Stadium as a goodwill gesture to McFadden in his final season.

I enjoyed seeing Mooy make Mata look like an A-League player before knocking in the goal. Lol man utd. A shame he won't be playing in the WC.

A rot has been set in. The club has to be very careful. Hopefully the team is not so poor that it'd put off Giroud from coming over.

They must play it, but I don't think it's a big thing outside the colleges and probably not inside either. I've never heard of a university team. Most students probably regard football as far too proletarian.

Anyway, I found this link, https://targetcareers.co.uk/uni/top-...s-for-football

Seamus McFadden: USD's ageless soccer wonder
Association Football was actually first formed at Cambridge University by public schoolboys, who made the first successful attempt to bring all the differing variants of the game that were played at that time under one set of rules, which were then pinned up to the Elm trees which surrounded Parker's Piece, which is a large area of common land where many of the games were played, and is, conversely, now used extensively for city-based league cricket.

Although seen as a 'working class' sport, the Universities and public schools used to have one term of soccer (with a variety of local rules), one rugby and one cricket. This persisted until the FA and the Public Schools had a fall-out, I think sometime around WWI - sorry but my memory is sketchy. Some clubs had definite public school/Oxbridge links - Chelsea were founded by an Old Etonian, and used to play in the school colours which later changed from Eton/Cambridge blue to royal blue.

There is still an active inter-college league for the Cambridge colleges (Cuppers) and the Uni side will play against other Universities, however the idea of haviong anything approaching pro coachng is left to rowing and the top levels of University rugby. I think it's fair to say that the idea of college sport over here is at a very different level to that in the USA. Bath University did have a college team that progressed into the 'noticable' stages of the FA Cup a few years back, which was an extraordinary but very rare event.

I played footie for my university. Not very well and not very often, but I definitely played.

Coaching? Don't make me larf!!! The football club was one of the many activities undertaken via the students union, so had a budget of almost £5 to spend on .... er .... whatever we needed. We would probably have had more if we had any one-legged lesbians playing of course, but they were in short supply and high demand at the time.

For the benefit of Americans and others unfamiliar with football in Britain, I can assure you that playing at university level is definitely NOT a route to getting oneself a professional contract.

Like Roger, I played at College level - the college would stump up for a new kit, about every three or four years and use of a Student Union mini bus to get to games. after that you were on your own.
There were some interesting characters though; we had one ex-Scotland youth international who has a fine central defender when he wasn't running Aid lorries over to Poland (during the 'Solidarity' years), a goalkeeper who was once on Southport's books and a remarkably good midfielder who had represented Portsmouth at some level but was generally worn out from too much shagging and being inclined to terminal laziness. And I played against Cambridge Uni College teams that included at least one future England international. At rugby. He was big, ludicrously quick and fit, but thankfully clueless.

There was a College P E Instructor who basically made sure that there were tennis nets when the courts needed them and we could find the corner flags readily enough. If you were lucky(ish) there would be a ref, generally from the home side, and even-handed in their ignorance of the laws of the game. Linesmen were generally subs who would immediately be distracted by any girls hockey match on adjacent pitches. Fair enough.

I suspect I'm not alone in detecting a lack of sympathy for supporters of both red and blue Merseyside clubs?

If clubs in this modern age chose to spend £30m+ on multiple misfiring midfielders, ignore their defensive frailities and decide that there's no striker good enough to wear their blessed shirts, er, tough.

I did smile however when Everton supporters took to social media to say that they'd prefer Koeman to stay rather than face the prospect of Moyes returning. That must hurt...
