R.i.p. Catherine Jourdan

Photographer and filmmaker Alain Fleischer, for whom she was a muse and companion, informed the Agence France-Presse on Tuesday that actress Catherine Jourdan, whose career was launched by Alain Robbe-Grillet, had died of a pulmonary embolism on Feb. 18 at the age of 62.

She was buried on Thursday 24th at Pere Lachaise cemetary in a strictly private ceremony.

Born October 12, 1948 at Azay le Rideau (Indre-et-Loire), Catherine Jourdan came to the capital as a model before entering the cinema, including twice appearing in small roles alongside Alain Delon in "Le Samourai" (1966) and "Girl on a Motorcycle" (1967).

But it was writer and film-maker Robbe-Grillet, - one of the high priests of the Nouveau roman - who, with "Eden and After", established her as an actress who still has many fans.

Catherine Jourdan also made films with Jean-Pierre Melville and Jean-Luc Godard, Jacques Baratier and other, lesser known figures, such as Michel Mardore, Ariel Zuniga (the Mexican director) and Sergio Gobbi.

A model and actress for Fleischer, she took leading roles in his films: "Les rendez-vous en forêt" (1971), "Dehors Dedans" (1975) et "Zoo Zéro" (1978).

"She had a very unusual career, both marginal and cult, recognized within auteur and experimental cinema," said Mr Fleischer, who spoke of her short blond hairstyle, and especially "her translucent skin which caught the light in an extraordinary way."

After the late 70s she had largely withdrawn from cinema and led a quiet life, "since she was no longer offered roles that came up to her expectations," added Alain Fleischer, who has himself been a little forgotten.
