If you think those comments are bad then you should read those on cycling forums. But it's not really anti-British or anti-Froome. It's anti-Team Sky, which has being going on ever since they started winning. Many 'cycling fans' hate Sky for many reasons - 'Murdochs, boring tactics, over-scientific, high-minded hypocrisy, arrogance, too much money, Wiggins scandal, parallels with USPS etc' Much of it based on an over-romantic view of cycling's Euro traditions and past which was always really pretty murky and often not that exciting. And the internet seems too help polarise opinions on everything these days and promotes conspiracy theories. But if you read about the crazy stuff that went on in the 90s/00s then you'll believe anything is possible. |

For months, we've had massive Grenfell Tower overkill on TV. What else is there to say? A bad business, but there have been worse things taking place in recent times.
Then there's Brexit. Nobody has really learned anything much about it as most of the reports are baffling speculative twaddle. Now, it's 70 years of the NHS. So what? Why not 75 or 100? I don't remember anyone making a big deal of things when it was 50 years old. Is this another attempt to make something out of relatively little for some less than obvious reason? What is missing is the fact that it is 100 years since one of the most unpleasant wars in history took place. When the 100 year anniversary kicked off for the start of WW1, the BBC couldn't fill our TVs with enough recollections, remebrances, documentaries and drama set in that time. But all this has stopped. Why? Is WW1 no longer of any importance? Are the BBC and ITV not going to bother with the end of a truly dreadful conflict that change the course of our nation and probably led to WW2? I sometimes just wonder if anyone is interested in getting their priorities right! Last edited by CARLTON BROWN; July 5th, 2018 at 10:48 PM.. Reason: One of my usual typos done in haste :-) |

Today I noticed that reality is neither safe nor politically correct.
Lions eat 'rhino poachers' on South African game reserve https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-44728507 Facebook censors the American Declaration of Independence for "hate speech" https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-44722728

RE 100th anniversary of WW1. The BBC will be covering major events and no doubt have special programmes as their extensive 4 yr comemoration cycle of the War comes to an end this November on Remembrance Sunday. The 100th anniversary of the RAF is most important and will be covered by the BBC next Tuesday morning, 9.30am onwards with a special church service attended by the Roysl Family followed by a massive fly past of aircraft, probably the biggest since the VE Day commemoration a few years ago(hoping that some of the planes fly close to me as could be on their flight path for the return journey) the NHS at 70 is also important and I seem to recall they had specials on television when it was 50.

How very sad for the rhino poachers. Hope the lions played with their food before killing it.

I'm not saying the NHS doesn't deserve attention, but why 70 years on? There is no obvious significance to this and all I seem to have heard on TV recently is interviews with people bitching about what trouble the NHS is in, etc. I'm a big supporter of the NHS and do not have an axe to grind about the concept of taxpayer funded medical cover or the service when you actually get it, which is generally excellent. But the NHS is currently in the shit and you really can't keep blaming the ageing population. Problems lie elsewhere. I just find the timing of this sudden 2018 interest in the NHS rather false and probably a political idea.
A look at the records for media coverage of any 50th Anniversary events for the NHS shows very little. The biggest UK story at around that time would appear to have been the Omagh Bombing. As for currently telling the public about WW1, I don't recall the slightest mention of Passchendaele, or anything else of interest about WW1 during the last year. Yes, there is the RAF event to look forward to and I expect to be under the flight path. It should be impressive - especially for the Royals who always like a good free show brought to their front door! But that's also not quite the point and there is certainly a need to tell everyone about the RAF, but again, why not WW1, when this is something actually more important that needs attention? There was plenty of TV coverage of WW1 in 2014/15 and suddenly it almost completely vanished. To just do something about the end of WW1 in November to wrap things up is really not good enough IMHO. Perhaps the truth is that people simply don't care any longer? |

I hope the lions got them, but if the authorities just shot them and threw them in the lion's area, that is okay with me too.
