People believing is this crap must never have received a good education and never have looked at the planets through a telescope. I just made some researches after your sentence. In fact, it seems that people who believe in the flat Earth, mainly are.... muslims or evangelists. But it's worrying, because in some democracies, they can become president and declare wars. I read that Erdogan do not believe in Darwin's theory or Bush Jr believes in Gog and Magog. Now you mentionned the flat Earth, I remember that I was surprised to speak with several female friends, who even if they got an university diplom in psychology, sociology or journalism, still believe in an irrational science like horoscope. |

But to your point, are you aware that Ronald Reagan regularly consulted Nancy's astrologer while president? |

"A man convinced against his will, is of the same opinion still." A favourite quote of mine.

Cough medicine bottles with "child-proof" lids are pretty bloody annoying when you are feeling like shit, coughing up your own crown jewels and struggling to get at the medication. In the words of Tom Lehrer:

Why is the world filled with angry people?
I have had a number of close friends die over the last three years, all of them well before their time. What this has taught me is that life is short, it can end tomorrow without warning and I am not going to waste the time I have left over trivia. We all need to lighten up. What if somebody cuts me up in traffic? I really don't care. It will make me .025 of a second late turning up to a job I don't enjoy as a result. So what? It's their problem not mine. This kind of crap really does not matter. In fact most of the modern world does not matter. It is only annoying if we let it be. If we all took a step back and thought less about our "rights" and more about our responsibilities to the rest of humanity and treated other people the way they expect to be treated ourselves, the world would be a far happier place. And I'm not some hippy Democrat, I'm a gun loving Republican. |

Maybe you don't know, but the French version of das Kapital is different as the German one. Marx read the French translation carefully, because he was sure that the French people were the people who could be the most interested by his theory. So there are several sentences that are only in the French version. And now the google translate translation of this part of the French "Capital". Quote:
Quote:
Damned... Marx was incredibly brilliant. Actually reading his theory, I observed that he understood all the ecological and social disaster that will be brought by the Capitalism. I know, that's hard to agree by people who learned during all their life, that Marx was a demon... and freedom was brought by Capitalism. But Marx wasn't a demon. I also read his love letters to his wife. This man was incredibly romantic and passionate. He wanted one thing, that people live their life and not become slaves of the masters of money. |

Marx did make analytical mistakes and miss some stuff, but all in all his analysis of capitalism is the most accurate model so far. I have no more wish to detail Marx's weaknesses than I do those of Milton Friedman, John Maynard Keynes, or the Austrian school. Life is too short. Suffice to say we are just starting to understand the dynamics of human societies and the economic arrangements that arise from them. To me, Marx's great contribution was to demonstrate that economic arrangements flow from the social and political agreements in cultures. But, Henry Higgins put it more simply, "It's the rich wot gets the pleasure and the poor wot gets the blame." Maybe. It wouldn't have been the first time. Edith Wilson ran the country after Woodrow's stroke. Last edited by Arturo2nd; February 9th, 2018 at 03:32 AM.. Reason: Additions |
