Default Burlesque star Lillian Brown, aka Lily Ann Rose

Stumbled across this on the internet. Never heard of her and she has no thread, but Lillian is writing a book about being a burlesque dancer in 1950s Boston. She started young and retired young. Three marriages, four kids, and six decades later, she tells her story.

“We’d do an exotic dance, remove our clothes, and when we were finished we had on more clothes than most girls on the beach these days. It was sexy, but today they’d laugh at you.”

https://www.news-journalonline.com/e...-lily-ann-rose

The story of burlesque star Lily Ann Rose
For years, Lillian Brown kept her past there — in the past. But now, she’s telling the story of a teenager with big dreams, who danced her way onto the risque burlesque stage of the late ’40s and early ’50s.
At 71 years old, Lillian Kiernan Brown speaks fondly of the girl she was, a blue-eyed girl with the stage name of Lily Ann Rose and the body of a woman much older -- something she used to full advantage to get ahead in the world of burlesque dancing.
Lily Ann Rose was hopelessly naive, Brown says. Lily Ann Rose was in love with love. And Lily Ann Rose was blinded by her dreams -- she wanted to be a star, to be somebody, to be famous.
So in 1947, she took the train from her home north of Boston into the city, to the smoky nightclubs of Scollay Square, and talked her way into the chorus line of a risque burlesque show at the Casino theater.
Within a year she would be the protege and stage partner of famous tassel dancer Sally Keith. She’d be the talk of Boston after an incident that, in today’s parlance, might be called a “wardrobe malfunction.” She’d be romanced, for part of an evening, anyway, by John F. Kennedy.
And she’d pack a lot of living -- some glamor, some heartache and much hard work -- into the next six or seven years.
Today, Brown is an outgoing, gracious grandmother who lives on Fleming Island in Clay County Florida, in a neat home that backs up to a golf course. She and her husband, Jim Brown, have been there two years, moving up from Palatka to be closer to her daughter in Jacksonville.
For years, she kept Lily Ann Rose a secret from most people, including her four children. After all, that was a part of her life that was long, long gone.
But Brown had done much writing over the years, and so in the early ’90s, she started writing a fictionalized version of Lily Ann Rose’s story. The story didn’t really go anywhere.
But in 1996, Brown’s Aunt Lillian, after whom she was named, died. Brown inherited her belongings -- including a trunk full of photos and newspaper clippings.
And there it all was again: pictures of her mother, Margie, and her Aunt Lillian, who performed together as the LaMont Sisters. In one photo, they wear brief stage costumes and pose back to back, holding hands, coy smiles on their faces. Another is a snapshot of the two on a beach, in what were daring outfits for the time.
And there was photo after photo of the teenage Lily Ann, photos Lily Ann had given her aunt when she gave up dancing more than 40 years earlier.
“When I opened that trunk, Lily Ann Rose popped out and started writing that book,” says Brown.

A STORY TO BE TOLD
In conversational style, it tells of Lily Ann Rose’s time in burlesque. Much of it’s set in Boston’s Scollay Square, now a vast expanse of concrete and government buildings, courtesy of urban renewal.
But when Lily Ann Rose danced there as a teenager, it was a bustling collection of nightclubs packed with sailors and soldiers, politicians, businessmen and couples on dates. There were also censors and the nosy eyes of the Boston Watch and Ward Society, perpetually on guard for indecency, but perhaps willing to look the other way if the price was right.
“It was raucous, smoke-filled, naughty without being nasty,” says David Kruh, a Boston writer who’s published two books on Scollay Square.
His second book, simply called Scollay Square (Arcadia Publishing), features several photos of Lily Ann Rose. “She wasn’t a star, but, you know, the square was just filled with people who were not stars but who were terrific entertainers,” he says. “And she was beautiful, a beautiful woman -- just look at those photos. She was definitely a reason for going down to old Scollay Square.”
Brown has a newspaper page torn from a 1955 edition of the Boston Daily Record, with a little picture of Lily Ann Rose, just a couple of inches away from one of Count Basie. An entertainment roundup lists where each of them will be performing, and an ad notes that “Lily Ann-Rose” has been “Held Over 2nd Tantalizing Week.”
Brown came from a family that had worked in vaudeville, so it was only natural, she says, that she wanted to get on stage too.
But vaudeville died during the Depression, making way for burlesque, which boomed during and after World War II. There were baggy-pants comics. Beautiful showgirls. Chorus lines. Daring strip routines that weren’t supposed to show any actual nudity, though one could always hope.
Gabrielle Olah, 77, began dancing in Scollay Square under the stage name of Terry Mixon, and knew Lily Ann back then.
“She was tall and willowy, very majestic,” says Olah. “And the way she carried herself -- she was discreet in everything she did, in all her movements. She was elegant, very dignified in what she did.”
Back then, burlesque was nothing to be ashamed of, says Olah. “We’d do an exotic dance, remove our clothes, and when we were finished we had on more clothes than most girls on the beach these days. It was sexy, but today they’d laugh at you.”
Kruh describes one popular routine as a sort of reverse strip: A woman would start off in a skimpy outfit and then gradually add clothes, until by the end she was fully clothed.
It’s a long, long way from what exotic dancers do today, Brown says.
“If I did what they do now, they would have put me away and never let me out, to do some of the things these girls do, even on TV.”
Burlesque was much different.
“The secret was the tease,” says Brown. “When I started, I asked the dancers: How come (customers) come back when they know they’re not going to see anything? And they said: ‘That’s the secret. They think tonight’s going be be my lucky night.’ ”
They got their wish, it turned out, as Lily Ann performed in her opening night performance alongside Sally Keith, queen of the tassel dancers.
It was a choreographed routine in which Lily Ann was supposed to lower a parasol over her breasts just as a carefully designed bra fell off her body. Flustered, she instead raised the parasol over her head -- as the bra dropped to the stage floor.
“The whole place went crazy. It was just like that thing with Janet Jackson. It caused such a furor in Boston.”

HER SECRET LIFE
It’s only in the past few years that Brown told her children about her life in burlesque. But now she’s more than happy to talk about it, and even asked her daughter, Katherine Fries, 43, to write a screenplay about it.
Fries, who lives in Jacksonville and has written several screenplays, finished it within months. It’s now making the rounds in Hollywood. She’s also made a brief documentary about her mother.
Her screenplay focuses on the relationship between Lily Ann Rose and her mother, Margie, who died in her sleep on May 16, 1953, overdosed on painkillers. Their relationship is the key to the story, Fries says.
Margie was an entertainer who became pregnant by a second-banana comedian who, it turns out, was married. She stayed with him, for a while, and left her baby to be cared for by Margie’s mother and sister, Lillian.
Aunt Lillian was a performer, too, but as soon as the baby came along, she got married and gave up the entertainment business. Margie, though, soon left for life on the road. She would come back every few months to live and work in Boston, sometimes with a new husband.
Brown never knew her father and grew up living with either her grandmother, her aunt or her mother, when she was in town.
“I never really had a home with a mother and a father,” she says. “But I had love from everyone. All I knew was love.”
Brown thought her mother was glamorous and beautiful. “I grew up wanting to be just like her.”
That’s one reason why she went to Scollay Square, getting a job just around the corner from a club where her mother danced. It wasn’t unusual, she said, for dancers to be teenagers.
“Girls over 20, they were considered has-beens in those days.”
Fries says she’s struck by how naive Lily Ann was as a teenager, even though she worked in the worldly burlesque business.
“She was raised in a very sheltered environment, even though her mother wasn’t the one who raised her,” she says. “Her grandmother took care of her needs, and she was like the little doll. She always wanted to be like her mother, who was so unattainable, so she went out and tried to do it. She just didn’t know the right way. She was just so naive.”
Brown’s memoir is mostly upbeat, a happy reminiscence of the excitement of that time and the people she met. But there’s an ugly part of her life she doesn’t duck: She was raped by a Boston cop, a long-time friend of the family. After the rape, Lily Ann was humiliated, she said, but still she begged him to tell her he loved her.
Fries couldn’t bear to leave the story like that. “In my screenplay I have her pick up his gun and shoot at him,” she says. “She was so naive -- I had to go back and add some fire to her.”

FINDING LOVE, FINALLY
As Lily Ann Rose, Brown danced until she was 21. Toward the end, she grew weary from travel and trouble -- including an arrest for indecency that was quickly tossed out of court (she was wearing a top and a bottom when it happened, she says).
“Then I got married, had a baby, started a new life,” she says. She quit abruptly, right before what would have been a lucrative booking on New Year’s Eve. “I was through. I’d had enough.”
She occasionally missed the life, but tried to find happiness and work as a waitress and a beautician. She got divorced and married again, and had three more children. In the second half of 1960s, she moved with her family to a Navy base in Morocco, where a long-time interest in writing really flowered: She worked for the base newspaper, wrote speeches and plays, and had a radio program.
Her life changed after her return to the United States when she met Jim Brown, who owned a jukebox company in the Tampa Bay area. They worked together, became business partners, then had a 10-year engagement.
He became her third husband.
“I didn’t really grow up until I was 35 years old, when I met Jim,” she says. “All my life, I was in love with love. But I didn’t know what love was until I met him -- real true love, when you can tell that person anything.”
Together they ran a dinner theater in Fort McCoy in the Ocala National Forest. And for the past 11 years, she’s been writing news stories and columns for the Palatka Daily News.
“I’m proud of everything she does,” says Jim Brown. “She’s good at writing.”
Fries says her mother is a focused person, pointing out how, in her 60s, she went to college to get the high school degree she never got as a teenage entertainer. Then there’s the book, Banned in Boston.
“She wants some sort of success,” says Fries. “She wants to create something from that, somehow to be successful through her book, her story, a movie. It means so much to her to make it eventually. You know how entertainers are -- they just want to make it. She’s never lost that desire to be a star.”
In her book, Brown tells of the stars she met, including famous dancers Sally Keith, Ann Corio and Peaches, Queen of Shake, who could stand still but make every muscle in her body quiver. She tells of a young Robert Goulet, of newsman Walter Winchell, of gangsters and cops.
And of a dashing war hero named John F. Kennedy, who she says sent a car to pick her up -- but who quickly sent her home.
They’re all stories from those busy years she remembers so well.
And they’re stories Brown had to tell.
“I didn’t want to talk about myself so much,” she says. “But I wanted to talk about the beautiful people I met along the way.”
