Then sometime in the 1980's the term cycle replaced the term bikes. If a person mentioned he had a "bike" people thought he was saying he had a motor bike or motorcycle. If you look in any dictionary the term still means a two wheel cycle with either fat tires(for off road biking) or narrow tires for everyday street riding or racing.

So why not adopt the Dutch word: fiets

I live in one of the wettest parts of the country, yet 5 weeks of sun and we are about to get a hosepipe ban. This means I will have to empty and refill my Hot Tub ahead of schedule.

More annoyed that all plastic hose connectors leak more than they let through.

Bicycle riders don't annoy me on the roads, even thought they act stupid on roads, it's also drivers who have to watch for the idiot, I always do.

The only thing that annoys me about bikes is that kids don't ride them as much as we did. There's 2 schools near where I live, I don't think a single kid rides a bike to school, there's no bike racks at either, when i went to school you either walked there, rode a nike and some did catch a bus who lived a bit far but nowadays I reckon 80% get dropped off by car. Lazy shits

My ol' man only ever drove me to school once and that was because of an injured ankle ... and even that was good ol' fashioned parenting, he said I could stay home but there would be no TV, no Atari, it would be homework and since it was homework I might as well do it at school. I put up a pointless protest and asked what I would do at recess since my ankle was fucked .... his reply, well you're great at getting detention so might as well get into trouble again and get it again and keep hitting the books I miss my Dad

The fact that they have less protection than a motorist is all the more reason why they should exercise more care and alertness .
In a recent news report I saw where mishaps between motorists and "preoccupied" pedestrians and bicyclists texting and/or on cell phones has gone up some 53% over the past few years. So to allege that many of the mishaps are generally the motorists fault is unjust and unfair.
I wasn't alleging that motorists (cars, trucks, motorbikes) are the majority cause of road accidents (not just those involving bicycles), I was stating it. Cars are a significant majority of vehicles on the road, and bicycles are well in the minority, so cars, trucks and motorbikes together will always (on an overall basis) be the majority cause of all road accidents. I don't mean on every single road at every single time.

There's not a lot of good data on bicycle accidents, and what there is has a spread of who was at fault in the incident, sometimes showing the cyclists themselves the main reason for their accident, other times clearly showing cars are the majority cause. What this doesn't show is that often both parties are somewhat at fault, and one of them is judged (often by a police officer) to be more at fault than the other by another party, then becoming the only at fault party and removing a good source of real data.

This factsheet by The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents seems to be a thoughtful and reasoned paper showing many variables to the overall picture, and a small % margin of motor vehicle drivers at fault when a bicycle is involved.

This link references studies that show a much larger margin with car drivers at fault. This link from the US shows in some jurisdictions cyclists were a higher cause of their own accident.

A lot of this seems moot to me as whether it is a motorist's fault or the cyclist themselves, it generally ends badly for the cyclist. Good cycling behaviour helps keep you safer, but the best way to do this is by providing separate cycle paths away from motorised traffic.

Agree, not just for bicycles but all vehicles on the roads. Down here where I've lived in the antipodes, third party property is compulsory and part of the vehicle registration charge, but that only covers you if you damage someone's property (like a fence or house) not their vehicle. I can't understand why it's not compulsory to have third party vehicle insurance.

I don't think bicycle registration is necessary or something that governments will implement (not cost effective), but my motor vehicle insurance policies also covered me when I was cycling. In any event, you are required to swap details in the event of an accident, and some insurance companies offer a no fault option, where you can lodge a claim, they will fix with no impact to no claim bonus, and they will chase the at fault party for reimbursement of their costs. I've had to use that several times with idiot drivers crashing into my car.

But in fact, in our Flemish dialect we call it vélo.

So do the French.

Thumbs down What annoys you the most ?

Total tossers who live a couple streets away that park outside V.E.F Towers (Alright already stop with the death threat pm`s, I`ll take a photo I promise, next time can be arsed ) South/East side enclave.
With car alarms so sensitive they sound off when a cat farts.
Then sound off and sound off with lights a flashing , until the automated response kicks in
Since the owners themselves can't bleeding hear it.
I hardly snooze the sleep of the Gods at the best of times. Less so during a crushing unending heat wave. So was really cheered to be woken up at twenty to three this morning .
Then kept awake for ten minutes.
Went outside brandishing a mighty weapon (Look can I help it woke up with a semi) yet nobody was about.
Even when the alarm finally silenced the lights kept flashing
Butt then what else should I expect.
As dwell in a city of dopes so daft they even stick their unwanted BBQ`s with the bins, in hopes it gets collected

This`ll be the second Tuesday and counting.

Arrrrrrgh
