Do European folk actually consider such things? I thought marrying your sister was basically an American hillbilly phenomenon, confined to Appalachia and parts of the South.

Do not forget that there was a lot of consanguinity in the past all around the world.
I suppose that the ancesters who looked like your example were unable to reproduce their genes with a partner, but their healthiest siblings could.

There still are areas on this planet in which there is a huge proportion of consanguinity.
