Supreme Court allows release of Trump tax returns to NY prosecutor

The Supreme Court cleared the way for a New York prosecutor to obtain former President Donald Trump's tax returns, dealing a massive loss to Trump who has fiercely fought to shield his financial papers from prosecutors.

The documents will be subject to grand jury secrecy rules that restrict their public release.

The ruling is a bitter loss for Trump, even if the tax records are shielded from public disclosure, after he consistently argued that the subpoena issued by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance was overbroad and issued in bad faith.


It means that the grand jury investigation into alleged hush money payments and other issues will no longer be hampered by Trump's fight to keep the documents secret.

The ruling was issued without comment or noted dissent.

Vance celebrated the order, saying in a tweet, "The work continues."
Trump's legal team did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Although Trump's personal lawyers may continue to fight their appeal in the case, the fact that the documents will be released by Trump's accounting firm, Mazars, effectively ends the dispute.

Mazars, in a statement, says it is "committed to fulfilling all of our professional and legal obligations."

The company adds: "Due to our industry's professional obligations Mazars cannot discuss any clients, or the nature of our services we provide for any client, in a public forum without client consent or as required by law."

Trump will address CPAC on Sunday, his subject the future of the party he took over in the 2016 primary then led from the White House through four tumultuous years. On Monday, citing anonymous sources, the news site Axios reported his plan to assume the mantle of challenger to Joe Biden – or another Democrat, should the 78-year-old president decide not to run for a second term.

An unnamed “longtime adviser” was quoted as saying Trump’s speech to the rightwing event will be a “show of force” with the message: “I may not have Twitter or the Oval Office, but I’m still in charge.”

A named source, close adviser Jason Miller, said: “Trump effectively is the Republican party. The only chasm is between Beltway insiders and grass-roots Republicans around the country. When you attack President Trump, you’re attacking the Republican grass roots.”

Trump blasts Supreme Court, Dems on tax return ruling: ‘It just never ends!’

Former President Donald Trump lashed out at the Supreme Court on Monday after it declined to stop the release of his tax returns to the Manhattan district attorney, saying ​the decision allows​ the “greatest political Witch Hunt” in the country’s history​ to continue.

“Whether it was the never ending $32 million Mueller hoax, which already investigated everything that could possibly be investigated, ‘Russia Russia Russia,’ where there was a finding of ‘No Collusion,’ or two ridiculous ‘Crazy Nancy’ inspired impeachment attempts where I was found NOT GUILTY. It just never ends!,” Trump said in an emailed statement.

District Attorney Cyrus Vance is investigating alleged insurance and bank fraud by Trump’s real estate company and has subpoenaed eight years’ worth of financial records from Trump’s accounting firm Mazars USA LLP.

The Supreme Court did not explain the reasons behind ​its ruling and the single sentence order did not include a dissent from any of the justices.

“So now, for more than two years, New York City has been looking at almost every transaction I’ve ever done, including seeking tax returns which were done by among the biggest and most prestigious law and accounting firms in the U.S.​,” Trump continued in the statement.

“The Supreme Court never should have let this ​’​fishing expedition​’​ happen, but they did.​”

The former president then went on to suggest it was part of a vendetta by Democrats and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

“This is something which has never happened to a President before, it is all Democrat-inspired in a totally Democrat location, New York City and State, completely controlled and dominated by a heavily reported enemy of mine, Governor Andrew Cuomo​,” Trump said. ​

H​e went on to say that Democrats are “willing to do anything to stop the almost 75 million people” who voted for him in the 2020 presidential race — “an election which many people, and experts, feel that I won. I agree!”

He said “headhunting” prosecutors and attorneys general who use the “law as a weapon” to target political opponents ​are “a threat to the very foundation of our liberty. That’s what is done in third world countries. Even worse are those who run for prosecutorial or attorney general offices in far-left states and jurisdictions pledging to take out a political opponent. That’s fascism, not justice​ — ​and that is exactly what they are trying to do with respect to me, except that the people of our Country won’t stand for it.

“In the meantime, murders and violent crime are up in New York City by record numbers, and nothing is done about it. Our elected officials don’t care. All they focus on is the persecution of President Donald J. Trump.

“I will fight on, just as I have, for the last five years (even before I was successfully elected), despite all of the election crimes that were committed against me. We will win!” he closed the response.

I have been a member here since 2009, follow rules completely.

Trump's 2017 presidency with his impeachment verdict is now officially concluded, his final days over, he's in Florida hoping to not be evicted from Mar-A-Largo per his past agreement not to use it as a residence as the local town board is having meetings.

And he got a lot of support from people when he went golfing last week cheering in the street.

There are fresh updates, news, and he is very much in the spotlight with his possible trials, scandals or a 2024 run so it was time for a new start, and will speak Sunday at CPAC.

If he is still the leader of the republican party as many politicians feel, he's going to be in the spotlight more than a traditional former president or a losing candidate who does not have a senate seat to return to.

SCOTUS giving Manhattan DA the right to Trump's tax records is big news.

So for what it's worth I began a new thread and title, whether it's positive or negative will largely be up to Trump, and the news. If other members wish to contribute, great, if not, we'll see where it goes. (if anywhere)

I have to answer this in 2 ways.

First as staff here, if I had a problem with the thread I'd have pulled it already but haven't. Given your thoughts about the end of Trumps presidency and he is out, the other thread might just be obsolete now and we may keep it closed.

Second, the bulk of my first post is how I feel as just another nobody in the world and my disgust with politics in general and for that matter the wedge it has created and continues to. Witch hunts, personality politics, tit for tat politics and media bias, turning blind eyes to one own preferred parties mistakes or immoral acts concern me.

Trump never has been and is incapable of being an angel, he's far far far from alone when it comes to that.
