Default Actress: Jetta Goudal

Jetta Goudal (b. Juliette Henriette Goudeket) was a Dutch-born American actress, who was successful in Hollywood films during the silent film era. She began her acting career on stage, traveling across Europe with various theater companies but after the first world war, in 1918, she left devastated Europe to settle in New York City in the United States.

Using the stage name 'Jetta Goudal', she started on Broadway in 1921, but after a meeting with director Sidney Olcott, who encouraged her venture into film acting, she accepted a bit part in the 1922 film 'Timothy's Quest'. She then moved to the West Coast and appeared in two more of Olcott's films in the next three years. She earned praise for her film work, especially for her performance in 'Salome of the Tenements' in 1925, and her growing fame brought her to the attention of producer/director Cecil B. DeMille. She was an unrepentant theatrical "grand dame" and possessed a fierce temper well known to the film community.

Under DeMille she appeared in several highly successful and acclaimed films and became one of the top box office draws of the late 1920s. This was the peak of her career ... In 1928 she was in 'The Cardboard Lover' which was produced by William Randolph Hearst and Marion Davies. In 1929, she starred in a film directed by D.W. Griffith 'Lady of the Pavements', but by 1932 her last film was in the can, bringing to an end an 18 movie career.

In 1930, she had married Harold Grieve, an art director and founding when her film career ended, she joined Grieve in running a successful interior design business. They remained married until her death in 1985 in Los Angeles. She is interred next to her husband in a private room at the Great Mausoleum, Sanctuary of the Angels, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California.

Her career started and ended with some controversial actions. From the start of her career in the US, she took great pains to hide her Dutch and Jewish ancestry. Given that so many in show business were Jewish, this was an unusual but not unknown action, but what she had against being 'Dutch' isn't known, however she generally described herself as a "Parisian", and on an information sheet for the Paramount Publicity Department she wrote that she was born in Versailles, the daughter of a fictional Maurice Guillaume Goudal, a lawyer. Her publicist at one point, even tried claiming her to be the daughter of World War I spy Mata Hari (no one took that statement seriously ). To compound matters she also declared that her birth date was July 12, 1901 ... very nicely knocking a decade off her age as well .... its not known what her wealthy parents (Her father was an Orthodox Jewish diamond cutter in Amsterdam), thought about all this.

Toward the end of her film career, DeMille claimed that Goudal was so difficult to work with that he eventually fired her and cancelled her contract. DeMille also claimed that her conduct had caused him numerous and costly production delays. Goudal filed a lawsuit for breach of contract, against him and DeMille Pictures Corporation, and in a landmark ruling, Goudal won the suit when DeMille proved unwilling to provide his studio's financial records to support his claim of financial losses.

But the victory was pyrrhic, in suing DeMille and her later high-profile activisim in the Actors' Equity Association campaign for the theatre and film industry to accept a 'closed shop', some of the Hollywood studios refused (blacklisted) to employ Goudal, and with the advent of talkies (she had a very thick 'French' accent), and limited role offers, effectively her career was over.

Trivia:
  • Her husband was a founding member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
  • In recognition of her contribution to the motion picture industry, Jetta Goudal has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6333 Hollywood Blvd.
  • In 1930, Jacques Feyder directed Goudal in her only French language film, a made-in-Hollywood production titled 'Le Spectre vert'.
  • Her 1927 lawsuit against Cecil B. DeMille set a precedent in establishing a star's rights.
  • For her perceived career sacrifice in the battle with DeMille, she became known as the "Joan of Arc of Equity".
Pictures:

She has no thread, and with so many pictures about she could stand one if anyone wanted to take it up.

Default TV Presenter: Gail McKenna

Gail McKenna is a presenter of TV programmes for CiTV in the UK. Leaving school in Liverpool aged 17, her modelling debut was in a Malibu advert, and she made her 'Page Three' debut (Topless or near topless photograph), in the British tabloid newspaper 'The Sun' in the same year. With her photographs appearing regularly in tabloid newspapers and men's magazines, she also did promo work in nightclub venues, for brand names such a 'Pernod' in the North of England and Glasgow, where punters could have kiss if they mentioned the password, which was published in 'The Sun'. She also appeared at darts matches, pub promo's and opening new nightclubs .... She even had her own fan club run by her agent Samantha Bond.

She made various attempts to break into Films and TV, She appeared in 'Consuming Passions' in 1986, and 'The Mountains of the Moon' in 1989. In 1990 Gail McKenna went to a 'Born Again Christian' meeting with her boyfriend and McKenna gave up topless and nude modeling at the age of 21 (a bit late for this if you ask me!).

With the 'Tits oot' photographic and promo work now over, she still had to work ... she apparently won the Bikini Reggae Hedonism (II) dancing contest in Jamaica in 1992 when she was a finalist in 'The Bikini Open 3' (Pay Per View TV). She also seems to have relapsed a bit on her new principles, because she is credited as being the star of 'Super Angel' in 1993 alongside Viv Thomas (for Bachelor Adult Magazine). She did work on seasonal pantomimes and fringe theatre productions, as well as a brief role in the Channel 4 soap opera 'Brookside'. She was also in Magnum's pop video - where she dances sexily and also Robert Palmer's famous Terence Donovan pop video, where she just stands on the sideline next to the Palmer.

She had made 'connections' while modelling who had a hand in getting into TV, and with the formation of Channel 5 in the UK, one of its principals was a former Sun editor. He employed her for Channel 5 Sport shows as an occasional sports presenter of 'SportsLive' and 'Turnstyle' (Presumably as the football (soccer) blonde?), and then in an animal show, and she is still at the station, currently co-presenting children's TV programme 'How 2' on CiTV.

Oops moments

Along the way (not withstanding the naked modelling ) there have been one or two of these.

She admitted to 'The Sun' that she had had numerous 'trivial relationships' throughout her modelling years. Gail told FHM in 1995 that 'I wouldn't want to be asked how many people I've slept with because I would have to lie'. She was reported to have been a victim of a stalking episode in 1987.

On October 16, 1994 the 'News of the World' Sunday paper published a photograph of Gail McKenna and Kathy Lloyd (another page 3 model), in the 'El Cid Club' in London, showing them both apparently snorting cocaine in one of its toilets.

McKenna also went on a modelling shoot with Kathy Lloyd in Antigua, and according to the account in the Sun newspaper of June 23, 1990, on one of the days they were invited to a house deep in the jungle to attend a party. According to their story, the men turned out to be devil worshippers, who tried to force drugs on them, kidnap, rape and murder them, but they somehow 'luckily' escaped, although other reports suggest that they were just 'abandoned in the middle of nowhere', after a heavy party.

Its interesting to note that if her magazine/paper career had been a decade earlier, and not coincided with the rise of the internet, then her later TV career would possibly not have been connected to the earlier one, and she might have gone further .... or maybe not.

Still, 'alls well that ends well' eh lads?

Trivia:
  • In 1988, she appeared in a Playboy magazine pictorial with a number of other Page Three girls, including Maria Whittaker and Suzanne Mizzi.
  • Measurements: 36D-23-34 (Source: Celebrity Sleuth magazine)
Pictures:

She has a full picture thread here already, so only illustrative pics only and as usual any follow ups to her thread please.

Default Actress: Neva Gerber

Neva Gerber Neva Gerber was an American actress of the silent era. Her mother moved her to Los Angeles, California and after her father died, her impoverished mother gave guardianship of her daughter to an attorney, and she was raised by nuns from the College of the Immaculate Heart.

After her graduation from high school, Neva became an actress in 1912 appearing for the Kalem Company, and in 1915 she changed her name when acting opposite Edwin August who did not think it sounded romantic enough, so for a time she was billed as 'Neva Dolorez', but she returned back to "Gerber" when she finally left August to play with another company.

Beginning in 1917 she appeared in several one-reelers and multiple serial films. She gained a reputation as one of the top ten "serial queens" of the silent film period, and worked for the Balboa company. However, her career stalled after 1930 when her principal director Ben Wilson died from heart disease. She appeared in 129 films between 1912 and 1930. She was married four times, and had her first child by the age of 20. She died in Palm Springs, California, and was buried in a pauper's grave.

She featured in the press quite a lot, for one thing or another:

The 'MOVIE PICTORIAL' edition of July 25, 1914 reported that 'whilst waiting in an automobile in the downtown area, Neva Gerber was publicly reproved by a social worker for having so much paint on her face. When the other actors arrived the lady fled without apologies'.

The 'PHOTOPLAYERS WEEKLY' reported that 'Neva Gerber and the actor Earle Emlay nearly died from drowning in the Feather River near Beldon. This occurred when filming on the river and the wire fastening the boat containing the actor and the actress had broken. The occupants were both hurled into the main stream ... a guide, twice attempted to reach them, but was hurled against a boulder, when a wealthy druggist, Frank E. Baskette (and father of child 'Universal dancer' Lena Baskette), jumped into the river, but the couple had disappeared for a second time before he came within reach of them. They were unconscious when the San Mateo resident succeeded in dragging them to a rock which stood above the water. Miss Gerber and Mr. Emlay were rushed to a hospital, and the former was found to be in a serious condition from a breakdown and a skull adhesion'.

But her main point of interest is that she claimed to have once been engaged to the ill-fated director William Desmond Taylor in 1915, whilst working for his 'Balboa' film company, but she broke off the match because she said both believed it 'unsuitable'. This claim brought her to the attention of both the police and the press as the search for his killer widened, and it was discovered that he had been making regular and substantial (for the times) payments to her, right up to his murder.

The 'Los Angeles Examiner' of the 4th of February 1922, reported on her cross examination and evidence by District Attorney Thomas Lee Woolwine - she is reported to have said that "I have never known a finer, better man than Mr. Taylor. He was the soul of honor, a man of exceptional culture, education and refinement, but possessing a reserve which very few were permitted to penetrate. So far as I know, he did not have an enemy in the world, although he had mentioned casually of fights he had on his various trips to the Klondike". She then added "I always assumed he was divorced, for had he not been, I do not believe he would have asked me to marry him. We were engaged for some time, but we finally came to the conclusion we were not suited to one another, so the prospective match was broken off about two years ago".

The paper followed up this report with another on the 6th February 1922, in which Lannie Haynes Martin recorded that Miss Gerber had told of Taylors 'many mysterious disappearances, for two and three weeks at a time continuing over a period of several years, and admitted that she had received thousands of dollars in checks from the dead director'.

"It is true that Mr. Taylor gave me three cars, first an old one that he had used and later two new ones which were purchased in my name. When he began giving me presents of jewelry, automobiles and money, we were engaged, we expected to be married as soon as I got my divorce and it did not seem anything out of the way" .... but even after the marriage was called off "he continued to make me little presents of money, by check, sometimes $75, sometimes $100 ...... I have never kept any record of the amounts given me, but his generosity has continued over a number of years and I suppose his gifts would amount, all told, to several thousand dollars".

You can see why the police and the press, for want of suspects and motives, were all over her .....

She gave various explanations for these payments, ranging from him letting her make the payments for the cars herself to stop "gossips from misconstruing the spirit in which the gift was made", to cover the costs of 'charitable donations she made on his behalf', to "He knew I was in temporary financial straits at that time and voluntarily sent me the $500". Needless to say the fact that her 'fiancee' was paying her cheques, and continued to do so after they were apparently no longer engaged, raised a number of eyebrows, and there were thinly disguised hints in the questions as to what the DA thought these amounts were really for

The reporter finished the report thus 'Just what was the reason for the whimsical and unequal gifts showered by William D. Taylor on various people, remains yet to be seen. To his invalid sister-in-law, with two needy, helpless children in Monrovia; he sent the comparatively small sum of fifty dollars a month ..... But to the pretty moving picture actress, during a period of several years, there was scarcely a singly check for less than one hundred dollars and sometimes there were several of these in the same month'.

Trivia:
  • She starred in the first crude sound era serial, 'The Voice from the Sky'.
  • The MOVING PICTURE WORLD edition of March 20, 1915 reported that 'Driving high-powered autos and aeroplanes is Miss Gerber's hobby. She has to her credit having driven the ninety-horsepower Mercedes car which the great racer, De Palma, drove, and in which he has braved death several times. She is but a slip of a girl, but is one of the most daring automobile drivers, and is well known among the auto jockeys of California'.
  • Neva Gerber was operated upon for appendicitis (a serious condition in those days) at the Clara Barton.
Hospital, Los Angeles, in August 1917

Default Model: Simone Farrow

Simone Farrow (aka Simone Starr) from Australia was once a P*nthouse Model Pet some years ago .... she then graduated to Bikini Model and lads mags such as FHM (who voted her one of FHM magazine's ‘sexiest women in the world’ three times), and all things pointed towards a jet-setting life of luxury ..... but as we have seen on numerous occasions on this thread, times change, girls looks fade and well .... a girls gotta eat! So Simone apparently cast around for a suitable career .... no doubt being based in Hollywood USA, she tried for acting roles, but that Aussie twang was a real handicap with US producers. Farrow was also promoting herself as a singer/songwriter, and on her website, as a would-be reality show star but to no avail.

So with the funds drying up and mortgages to meet, she turned to the 'easiest' (but also the hardest) money there is ...drugs. As well as the drugs, she was alleged to be involved with 'standover men' (a thief who specializes in persuading other thieves to surrender their valuable items ... mugging the muggers so to speak ), and other criminal enterprises in the U.S. and Australia. She allegedly worked her criminal enterprises from an apartment near Sunset Boulevard. It was there she was kept under watch by U.S. authorities.

When she was arrested in Australia in October 2009 after flying to Australia while the United States DEA was raiding her Sunset Boulevard apartment, allegedly seizing drugs and documents. She was accused of trafficking the drug meths in bags of bath salts, and the police and US DEA claim she has used at least 19 aliases, in both the USA and Australia. Its alleged that high-grade crystal methylamphetamine, was often piled up on desks in the apartment, to be posted to New South Wales and Victoria Australia. After the buyers had sent cash to Farrow through the post or made deposits at National Australia Bank branches into her bank account, the drugs were posted, hidden in packages labelled as ‘bath products’, ‘pants’ or ‘small fountain kits’.

After her initial arrest in Queensland on Australia's Gold Coast, Farrow was bailed when a woman she met in jail put up $AUS320,000 surety (how wealthy are the inmates in that prison?). That was dropped to $AUS150,000, which was put up by a barrister and a doctor. As a condition of her bail Farrow was to reside at the apartment of the barrister before that was altered to allow her to live in the doctors property. However things went tits up when she did a bad thing and probably losing her backers all their bail deposits, absconded .... she was eventually recaptured after a month hiding out in a lowlife motel on Queensland’s Gold Coast.

She was then sent to Sydney for trial process and told a judge that she had only fled bail because ‘someone was trying to murder me’ .... She even had a the nerve to beg an Australian judge to let her out of jail on bail again She sobbed and wailed as she told the judge she was 'confused' and didn't understand 'why she was in jail'. She said she needed time to find a lawyer (having just lost one), and raise more money for bail .... needless to say the judge opted to keep her behind bars, and also rejected her request to keep reporting restrictions on her case.

Pictures:

Surprisingly for an ex P*nthouse Model Pet of The Month I could find no nudes whatsoever .... they must be out there somewhere .... so a new thread for her awaits whomever finds them Here's all I could find ....

Default Actress: Juanita Hansen

Juanita Hansen was an American silent film actress. After graduating from Los Angeles High School she secured her first acting job in 1914 with L. Frank Baum's "Oz Film Manufacturing Company" when she appeared in the 'The Patchwork Girl of Oz' (based on Baum's book). She secured a major role in her next "Oz" film that same year titled 'The Magic Cloak of Oz'. She was soon associated with Famous Players-Lasky and acted opposite Jack Pickford, and then became one of the Sennett Bathing Beauties doing comedy shorts at Keystone/Triangle Studios. As she got older she moved to serious roles for Universal Studios, and starred in the eighteen episode action/adventure serial called 'The Brass Bullet', and as "Princess Elyata" in a fifteen episode serial called 'The Lost City'. She then got a contract with Pathe in a 1920 deal, starring in a fifteen episode serial titled 'The Phantom Foe' and another called 'The Yellow Arm' in 1921.

But by 1923 following an uncredited role it was all over and she was forced to retire from films after 48 movies. in 1928, she was hired for a Broadway play. However, an accident in the hotel when she was burned with scalding-hot water, and after she failed to fully recover she lost the role. She attempted a come back in 'The Sensation Hunters' in 1933 but that was it.

After this last film comeback she finally gave up and in 1934, she began tent lecturing at carnivals and traveling shows (mainly on the evils of drug abuse). But her life wasn't especially happy and her life took turn for the worse in 1941, when she attempted suicide by an overdose of sleeping pills. She recovered and finally took a job as a clerk for a railroad, and died of a heart attack in 1961. Her body was found by her maid, and she was interred in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California.

Oops Moments:

Being here, needless to say she had her problems, mainly brought on by her good money and early fame .... Her contracts were running at $1,500 a week which was big money (average price of a new house was $3,200), which gave a lot of scope to develop issues.

She had a penchant for fast cars and she was constantly in the news following arrests for speeding .... but combined with a love of all-night partying, it wasn't long before she had developed a strong taste for cocaine, to which she soon became addicted. Apart from other issues, her drug use created problems with her work, and she even had problems finishing the serial 'The Yellow Arm'. In fact so much so, that when it was finally completed (both over schedule and over budget), Pathe dropped her. Essentially she found herself unemployable.

Following her scalding accident in the hotel, she had to fight a long legal battle to win $118,000 in damages. Although she received this large settlement from the hotel, much of the money she got went for lawyers and hospital bills, and either drugs, or drug cures .... because sadly a side affect of her burning was that to ease the pain she was given morphine, to which she became almost immediately addicted.

She was arrested for possession of narcotics in January 1923. and she was jailed in 1937 on a narcotics charge, but she was cleared when she gave testimony that tablets which police found in her purse were prescribed to her for medical purposes.

Long periods of her life were spent cleaning herself up and getting off drugs, only to succumb again.

Trivia:
  • Mack Sennett was apparently so struck by her beauty, that he promoted her above the other girls, which caused some friction among them.
  • She later founded the Juanita Hansen Foundation, to fight against drug addiction (and promote her name).
  • 'The Lost City' was re-edited and released in the form of a feature-length film with the title 'The Jungle Princess'.
  • She also worked in the Works Progress Administration during the 'Great Depression'.
  • In 1938 she wrote the book, 'The Conspiracy of Silence', arguing that drug addicts should be sent to specialized medical institutions for treatment, instead of being sent to prison.

Here's the copy that accompanied it ....

"Simone secured her first modelling gig on the Gold Coast at 16 and she’s never looked back. These days she can boast cover shoots for almost every international men’s magazine, but it is exclusively for Australian P*nthouse that she took her bikini off for the first time. When she’s not popping up in minor roles in blockbusters such as The Matrix, Mission Impossible II and Moulin Rouge, or featuring semi-naked in other (lesser quality) men’s magazines, Simone is modelling for us." ... how times have changed!

It is now considered a lost film, and her last film was 'Son of Mine' in 1932, bring to end a 45 movie career. Natalie Joyce died in San Diego, California in 1992, aged 90.

There But For The grace Of God moment .....

Ms Joyce had one other aspect of her life, which brings her here, when she 'helped' the Los Angeles Police Department with their enquiries with 'important information' in their quest to find two doctors wanted in the death of 22-year-old dancer Delphine Walsh in May 1929. Walsh died in a Glendale, California hospital following an illegal procedure (an abortion) .... it was never fully explained what Ms Joyce's connection was with the 'doctors'

Trivia:

Default World Championship Skier: Ingvild Engesland

Skier Ingvild Engesland is a young Norwegian woman who entered into the Norwegian skiing championships for the first time in 2001, when she also made it into the Norwegian team in the Nordic Junior World Championships. Her career progressed if not spectacularly, at least consistently and she finished fifth in the last World Under-23 Championships.

Oops:

However, in a career move that she almost instantly regretted, she was persuaded by someone, who maybe should have known better, to pose nude for LEK magazine

Of course the publicity was tremendous and she went on record saying that "I do not know why the television and radio in my country are acting like crazy, just because a professional athlete has agreed to take a photo-shoot for a pornographic magazine. Every month sees a large number of girls in that magazine, and nothing ever happens. I do not think I'm different from them, except for my profession. I am very surprised that there has been so much fuss, I am not famous at all. Now that I see the consequences I truly regret doing it”.

Quote:

I thought it wasn’t anything to worry about, there are pictures of naked girls in that magazine every month without it causing any fuss”.
"I want to be remembered as a skier"

Pictures:

There were originally only supposed to be only 'ten photos' but hey, I know how you like sporting girls here, so I managed to find a few more from the shoot ...

Non Oops.....

Default Model: Kirsten Imrie

COKE, charlie, C, snow, or flake. Call it what you will, there is no doubt that cocaine is the drug of ruination for modern celebs. Of course as we have seen this behaviour trickles down into the sort of waters that this thread fishes in, and so many a minor wannabe insists that cocaine is the drug keeping their cosmetically-enhanced noses pressed against the window of show business fame. This 'class A' drug isn't dubbed the 'showbiz sherbet' for nothing. So we come to the tale (in many of her own words) of the fall from grace (into disgrace) of Kirsten Imrie.

Born in west London, Imrie was raised in Musselburgh, East Lothian, Scotland from the age of three. She left school at the age of 16 and when she was later made redundant from her job as a factory worker, and with a marriage collapse, she left for London and the bright lights ... a glamour modelling career soon beckoned, and she was soon mixing on the edges of celebrity. She started appearing as a Page Three girl in The Sun in November 1988, shortly after her 21st birthday, and continued to appear regularly on Page Three until August 1993.

At the height of her 'Page Three' topless modelling fame she was living the 'jet-set' lifestyle, earning £100,000 pa, and flying back and forth between London and Los Angeles. She was even hired by cable channel L!ve TV as a sports presenter, but that ended in 1997. This brought her designer dresses and invitations to parties featuring such stars such as Barbara Streisand and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

But with the glitter and glamour, came the dark-side of the force. She was drinking too much, and then started taking drugs. Her earnings could never keep up with the need for cocaine, and such was her drug dependence that she got heavily into debt, and was unable to work sufficiently to keep up the payments. On 27 September 1994, when she appeared in a London court on charges of driving under the influence, her solicitor told the court that she was no longer receiving regular modelling work, was struggling under a "mountain of debt," was living on unemployment benefits, and was "almost on the breadline".

"At first everyone wanted to know me and be seen on my arm. I never had to pay to get into the top nightclubs and I used to go out seven nights a week with other models like Kathy Lloyd and Gail McKenna. I had a lovely three-bedroomed home in Surrey and life was brilliant. But then I got hooked on cocaine and booze and everything began to fall apart. Nobody would touch me and the work just dropped away."

A few years ago she was discovered sleeping rough on a park bench in Clapham Common London because of her addiction to cocaine. "My life has become a nightmare," she admitted when she was found "Because of the drugs I got into debt and had to sell my house. I was staying with friends but they kicked me out because of my habit. Most days I don’t know who I am or where I will end up - it’s terrifying. I live off cheap hamburgers, cornflakes and thrown-away fruit the shops can’t sell. I use the local swimming baths to get a shower. I don’t want pity, just a chance to try and put my life back together. But I am an ex-Page Three girl with a history of drugs and booze - who would want to employ me?"

Apparently she has since cleaned up her act, and according to later reports she was offered support after the newspaper tabloids stated that readers' donations had enabled her to rent a flat in South London, and resume her modelling career, and turn her life around. She is believed to have orginally wanted to start her own glamour model agency, but it appears that she is now back doing much more adult content shoots, as an open legged 'milf', and appearing on very late night 'strip for money TV' programs.

Still, its a tale that illustrates how quick the descent from the foothills of celebrity can be, and how it is so addictive, that they immediately try to climb them again.

Trivia:
  • In 2003, Imrie spoke about her homelessness and addiction problems in the UK television documentary 'The Curse of Page 3'.
  • When she was in her first modelling stint, the British tabloid newspapers regularly featured stories about Imrie's jet-setting lifestyle, her then alleged alcohol and cocaine abuse, her celebrity relationships, and even her alleged lesbian affairs with other glamour models.
  • She replaced Gail McKenna on L!ve TV.
Pictures:

She has a very full and extensive thread here already, with over fifty pages of excellent content (inc movies), so these are just illustrative pictures, and so as usual, any follow up pictures, and any comments to her main thread please.
