It occurs to me that the possibility of an afterlife is a lose/lose scenario for the committed atheist. If they're right they can't crow about it and if they're wrong, they're facing a potentially pissed off, omnipotent deity.

One of my close friends had a near death experience after a heart attack. The experience didn't make him religious, but it stayed with him almost every minute of every day. When people wake up from a dream they realize that it was a dream. He was 100% convinced that the other world he had entered was real. He had a good family and a good job, and he continued to deal with them almost normally, but he told everyone that the next world is better. One day he announced that he was going to die again soon. He died the next day from a second heart attack. He stayed gone that time. He was 43.

When the brain is deprived of oxygen, at the moment of the heart stopping, or other factors, there is most often a sense of fading toward a white light or going towards a white tunnel of some kind.
I have experienced this myself several times. But not near-death-experiences, but because i used to have a problem that I stopped breathing in my sleep. I saw a white tunnel spinning before me, and I was drawn to it, then I awoke gasping for air and flinging about trying to get back to life. "Religion" tells us that when we die, we go to "Heaven" or we go to "Hell". I think that in the last few moments we have, as our brains die, we make our own Heaven or Hell. |

I'm hoping there is no afterlife because:
If there's a Heaven, I'll be stuck with about half of my kin - forever! If there's a Hell, I'll be stuck with about half of my kin - forever! And as for reincarnation; Life's a bitch and then you die. Life's a bitch and then you die. Life's a bitch and then you die. ....... |

I am a Frisbeetarian. We believe that when we die, our souls fly up on the roof and get stuck.

I'm an atheist so when I die it's game over. I have no fear of being wrong anymore then I have a fear of a giant spaghetti monster climbing through my window and eating me.

where do we go?
well, I believe that I will go to lucie kotalova heaven and will finally find her last set and name used. this would were I any religion at all be heaven. actually did for real die at about 21 yrs old. no breath heart beat or any sign of life at all. for about six minutes per 20 some bystanders. most I can tell you is something left and hit the lights on the way out. at that point zip zilch. no idea why I came back but started to realize I was back. no big entrance or exit drama. just there one minute, gone the next. not all that thrilled I now have to do it again. first time no pain or strain, wondering what the hell might be this next time.

Hell is not a place, but a condition that is utterly devoid of love. The moment you decide that you're willing to love, you will be lifted out of hell. So you can't be in hell unless you seriously chosen to be by denying love completely.
Earth is where we are, and where we will come again with our personality made anew. You can't go to Heaven just by being good. Like Hell you can't be in Heaven unless you wanted it above all else with no exception. They moment you think of anything earthly, such as porn, you're dragged back here. Your body does not exist. It is just an avatar you've chosen for yourself in this world. So in reality you can't die, it is just your personality / avatar that does. |
