The part where it's perfectly OK for the extreme left to have a shot at the west for any reason yet continually fail to see their own faults, that said throughout history both the east and west are not without sin,

How does it go
Let he who is without sin cast the first stone

Now back to topic.

Yeah, let's get back to topic but let us first finish our offtopic rants about the glorious Empire that is about to return as soon as Nigel Farage's Brexit Party leads us to the next Battle of Trafalgar that will put an end to the European yoke.

It looks like some people claim monopoly over what is allowed to be said here and that everyone should just accept the rampant British chauvinism that's not only present in this thread. I find that very disrespectful towards non-British members and have yet to read some constructive criticism of the EU from the Rule Britannia crowd. It's not like there's nothing to criticise about the EU. As a matter of fact, there's a lot wrong with the EU. I'm not its greatest fan either but I'm not looking for a solution in wishing the old Habsburg Empire back.

A lot of what you hardcore Brexiteers write here sounds like something you memorised from a trashy tabloid like the Daily Mail.

Nigel Farage launches Brexit Party ahead of European elections
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-47907350

If EU elections are held in the UK, as its likely, it will be interesting to see

1 - Turnout, historically pisspoor
2 - How the Brexit Party fare compared to UKIP
3 - How Labour & Conservatives fare

If the election does take place I will look at the candidates in my area and unless there is a more high profile anti-EU candidate I will vote for the Brexit Party.

Brecht I am a European. My heritage is Polish/German/English/Scots and probably a bit of Irish. I have travelled widely throughout Europe, have family in Poland and France, and used to have a part share in a house in Italy. I think there are many things that are good about the EU. But I see the whole edifice as being something designed for the benefit of the officials of the Commission rather than the for the good of the people they are supposed to serve.

Look at the Euro. When it was mooted some very well respected bankers and economists set out a list of conditions that countries entering the Euro must meet. Only three countries met those conditions, every other one was allowed to be rather economical with the truth because the Commission wanted the Euro to work and be the currency of the new state. The result is all sorts of trouble all over Europe. Germany is doing very well out of it but the PIGS are suffering major economic problems. Youth unemployment in Greece Italy and Spain is running over 30%, not a good advert for the EU and this could be avoided if they were out of the Euro.

Freedom of movement is an excellent thing except when the Commission gets involved. I have no problem with EU workers coming to the UK to work but I have do have a problem with groups coming here without a job and existing on our social security system with no intention of working. I have a bigger problem with a Commission who when faced with a national government not liking the set up start crowing about the 'principles' of the EU. Junker wouldn't know a principle if it was tied the front of a train and crashed into him.

I don't really want to reply to Brecht as it isn't on topic, but i think I should.

Brecht, you're complaining about brexiters and labelling us "The rule britannia crowd".

There may be a few of them here, (though I don't know of any), and you're complaining about the British empire and claiming we want it back.

I don't.

And I find it ridiculous that so many people (only a few here, but overall there's a lot) complain about the British empire and yet ignore all the sh*te done by every other empire, all the slavery, murder, destruction, theft etc. which all empires have done. It seems only the British empire was bad.

The Romans are often held up as a great civilization and yet it was a vicious, murderous enslaving empire.

Alexander the great was a vicious, destructive megalomaniac who wanted to rule the world, but well, he was an incredible military genius so forget that.

The egyptians, the hittites, the persians, the babylonians, the aztecs, etc. all have their bad sides glossed over 'cos, ooh they were interesting!

The mongols often massacred tens of thousands of people that lived in the towns they conquered. Is this mentioned every time anyone mentions the mongol empire? No.

But whenever almost anyone mentions the British empire, we all get reminded of the sh*t done by the Brits of those days, it's like we have to have it rammed down our throats. Nothing excuses the sh*t done by the British empire, but it was no worse than any other. Well, it wasn't quite as bad as a recent short-lived empire, but I'm sure no-one from that country wants it rammed down their throats, nor should it be.

I can't think of any constructive criticism of the EU, but perhaps I'd dislike it less if the EU was changed to a loose grouping of countries that have got together to make trading easier, and I think it ridiculous that the EU parliament should change locations a couple of times each year. What a waste of time, money and effort that is.

Sounds like a damned good idea to me - I wouldn't have had to grow up during the Cold War and all those poor Russkis and the other subjugated peoples of the Soviet Union [ now that was a really nasty empire] would have been free of of their tyrannical Commie masters.
