I had an endoscopy last year. It was horrible. Two nurses, one holds your head down, the other puts a "gum shield" in your mouth with a hole in it. And sticks the camera in. Because of the gag reflex I nearly choked to death. But once the camera goes past that it's plain sailing.

I found the prep wasn't that bad, just make sure you're very close to a toilet. Honestly. Once you need it there will be not enough time to search for one.
I was given some liquid to get things going, that helped a bit. I also was given a tiny pill that I had to take around 8 pm, it didn't do much until a very sudden onset one hour later and then I reached our toilet almost too late (just to give you a fair warning :-)

I was examined in the morning so I had to clean things too with a clisma which also wasn't too bad.
The examination itself was a bit painfull at times (without sedation

) but normally they will put you asleep and then it will be OK. Next year I will be in a hospital that does give sedation.

Anyway, it will be over before you know it

. As you have to refrain from eating for a while make sure to bring some lovely sandwiches

for when you're done

The painfull thing is mainly the air they pump inside in order not to damage your colon. It feels familiar, like you have farts with diarrhea and you keep everything up in order to keep your pants clean. The thing is they tell you all the time that it's alright to "let some air escape" but the damn rubber hose sits in the way like a cork on a winebottle

. So it can build up quite a lot.
Like I wrote, my GF had this examination in another hospital, she was sedated and cannot remember any major discomfort.

In hospital I had a Dr stick her finger up my arse and that wasn't nice, so I dread to think what a camera would feel like

The hose with camera (and the device to perform a biopsy) is slightly thinner than a finger.

I got a letter from the Scottish Government about getting checked for cancer up the arsehole . I didn't read it closely but I got the impression that you shit on a piece of paper then cut off a lump of shite , stick it an an envelope and send it off to Edinburgh where some sort of shite expert has a look at it to see if you've got cancer of the dung funnel.
