Default tigers

I need to cool this tiger love in down a little. The only things the tiger had going for it where its 88mm gun derived from an anti aircraft gun and its massive frontal Armour. Its engine was underpowered and its transmission was chronically weak and prone to failure, I once read a story that said Jewish slave labour, having heard the problems the tigers caused the allies, often broke odd teeth in the gearboxes meaning the tanks would roll for a while until broken teeth met then stopping the tank dead. It certainty had the advantage over most allied tanks early on but the British 17 pounder AT gun could kill a tiger head on at any range you pleased. Probably the most potent of the German tanks was not the panther but its gt3 version sister the jagdpanther, lower, Armour almost as thick as a tiger's and fitted with a fixed mounting of the tigers 88mm gun instead of the original 75mm but much more maneuverable it was a hunter killer in the proper sense.

Nevertheless, the commander drove to the nearest repair stop. About 80 km. There, they counted about 120 more hits. This tank was combat-ready the next day.

Unfortunately, i don't know where i've read that story.
I have heard a story similar to this as well, if I had to guess, this story originated during the middle of WW2. During Mid 1942 to Early 1943, many of the armies of the various combatants in the war still had 37mm and 50mm or equivalent caliber guns as the standard Anti-Tank weapon still in wide use, the Soviet army was still using the 14.5 Anti-Tank Rife right up to 1943.

These guns would not be strong enough to penetrate the Tiger's front or side armor, so it would have been entirely possilbe that the Tiger I tank would have been able to take that many hits from all sides and still drive away.

Not simply the earlier Tiger I version of the 88, but the "ultimate" 8.8 cm KwK 43 cannon used on the King Tiger. Based on the existing Panther chassis, the vehicle did not suffer too many mechanical problems. It had an upgraded transmission (the Zf Ak 7-400 heavy duty) and final drive to counter the Panther's main weakness.

That and the fact that it's superbly sloped armour just looks great!

Yes....

but eleven were from 76.2mm shells - thats the main gun of the T34 as well as the main Soviet AT gun - thats nothing to sneeze at when you consider the other stuff. 3 anti tank mines?!

And it STILL kept going for 60km?!?

Yes, but you wouldn't say that to it's face!

Not with a 380mm rocket assisted mortar that was originally designed for the German Navy. I believe it was intended for use against strongpoints and fortifications.

Just happend, this is a video of a US house being demolished by what the article states to be a British FV432 armored personnel carrier, simply driving through the house, pretty cool!

The new modern Challenger isn't a bad tank but the Chieftain I remember very well when I was a kid we went(with the school) to Bovington Tank Museum, tons of tanks to climb over and look at.

Personnel carriers, tanks?-you're welcome!
