I've thought for a long time that a big part of the appeal of girly mags it is that they provide one with a virtual harem; even if a bloke has just the one lass in real life or come to that none, with a good collection of girly mags he's looking at his favourite girly models and in his imagination he can be shagging each and every one of them as the fancy takes him. That was an eyes on stalks cover for me too although it was probably on the top shelf about 15 years after I first started buying girly mags. Definitely- that one must have been a must-have for every spotty oik who'd watched Grange Hill in the 80's - it certainly was for me! As I said early on in the thread, as soon as I saw that cover on the top shelf of WH Smiths at my local station while waiting for a train back to uni, there was no way on this earth I was going to miss buying that one.

Covers that grab your attention fit into two categories I guess- it's either the pic that does it, or if it's one of those all-too-rare scoops when a celeb was persuaded to strip, it's the identity of the cover girl- Paula-Ann's Mayfair cover grabbed me on both scores, I've always really liked that pic.

Another cover with a celeb on it that grabbed my attention and had me buying an issue of a mag I rarely bought, was ice-skating legend Katarina Witt's 1999 Playboy shoot. OK, the cover shot was hardly revealing (and IIRC the story that she'd stripped for Playboy had been in the news enough that I probably went out purposely to get a copy of that issue anyway), and Playboy was only ever a very occasional buy for me- however as a sports fan, that 'Katarina Witt nude' headline was one I was never going to resist, and Kati's spectacular body certainly lived up to the hype - she certainly kept my wrist well-exercised

There's a story connected to this magazine that isn't directly connected to the day I bought it. I saw it on sale in my local John Menzies and my eyes were immediately drawn to the white knicker gusset of the girl posed with her knees drawn up to her chin. It was a 'must have' on the strength of the cover alone but on flicking through it before buying it the cover girl also featured in a set inside - how often has one of us bought a mag on the strength of the cover and then found the covergirl wasn't featured?
